2004-12-19 22:36:00 | My daughter, a uni student, has just been given a PB 1400 notebook in exchange for letting her friend store gear in my basement. My first thought was to junk it - after all, it's 7 years old! To my surprise, I find it's a brilliant wee beast, certainly much sharper than the PC "notebook" that I carried around in a wheelbarrow in '97. It will be great for her to take notes and write essays on - she's a technophobe, so anything rinky-dinkier is wasted on her. However, I'd like to be able to add a modem and printer, maybe put it on the network when she's home. Can any of you Macophiles tell me (a) whether current Mac PCMCIA cards are backwardly-compatible and (b) if not, what I should look for on e-Bay or Trademe; and (c) what sort of printers were compatible with this funny-looking round interface? Would also be helpful if someone knows of any sites/newsgroups I might visit to see if I can buy/trade components. This thing really is too good to throw away.

2004-12-20 00:24:00 | Hi Arfitty Welcome to PF1. I can't help with your Mac question, but a word of advice: It is not a good idea to openly post your email address on this or any other forum as it is an open invitation to spammers. I recommend that you choose a new user name and ask the Forum moderators to delete this post before it is too late. If you live in ChCh, I could put you on to someone who could help - he may even have some spare second hand modems knocking around, and he should know which printers work. I had one of those (ahem) "a few years back", and as far as I recall I was using an HP 5MP LaserJet, but almost any HP printer worked then. I think HP dropped support for Macs for some printer models at some stage, but I can't see this as being a biggie. There may be a few oopses trying to get a driver now, but again as far as I recall there are a lot of drivers included in the Mac OS and you should be OK. Let me know if you are in ChCh - if not, I will email you with the guy's details and you could email/phone him. John

I'll contact the boss. John: I live in Dunedin, so I'd be very grateful if you could put me on to your mate. |

2004-12-20 02:02:00 | From memory they're not Cardbus compatable, that's all. Apart from that it's just a driver issue. I had one of these running with a PCMCIA CF reader and a 256mb CF card with the OS installed on that - it ran really fast. | Spout (6433) | |
2004-12-20 02:26:00 | You can use just about any printer with a serial interface. HP Laserjet II had a switch inside to make it work with the RS422 levels, but it's just a matter of earthing one of the lines. It's easy enough to make a cable for it. | Graham L (2) | |
