306632 2004-12-22 00:43:00 Hi folks

We have a computer running Windows 98SE where the mouse isn't loading on startup. When we ran a step by step startup and and said yes to lmouse.vxd and no to loading msmouse.vxd all ran as it should no problems. When we went to the vxd list in the registry to remove it from running at start up we could not find it where it should be with the other vxds listed. How can we stop the msmouse.vxd loading?

Any and all help apreciated.

Cheers.

306634 2004-12-22 10:43:00 if you cant find those in the registry
do search of c drive for files (*.ini if I remember correctly) containing the text string .......mouse
or you could do it the hard way and type in at the run command
sysedit that will open ALL your configuration files for editing, BE CAREFULL
REM rather than delete (rem => remark or comment out, this command is to ignored)

306635 2004-12-22 11:06:00 Have you searched C: for msmouse.vxd? If not, do so and rename to msmouse.old, reboot. If your happy with the current Imouse driver and it works keep it. Not sure if you can rename it from Windows or you need to do it from a DOS prompt.

It's probably a corrupt .vxd that's causing the problem, you can replace it by extracting a new one off the 98 CD.

What was the registry key you were looking for?

306636 2004-12-22 18:00:00 If I remeber correctly VXD's are created at runtime (virual device drivers) therefore you may not find them in a file search ( I maybe wrong here) but you will find refernce to them in either the registry or system ini files.
But I do agree with Murray it looks like a curruption.
Last thought, I had simular problems with VXD's a while back (not mouse) and it turned out to be faulty RAM so maybe memtest86 is worth tring also

306637 2004-12-23 10:14:00 I would suggest removing your mouse drivers, unless required for Dos, Win3.1x or Win95 (most 16bit apps) but apparently you are running Win98 and the drivers should be removed and either use newer drivers for you operating system or use the windows drivers, you may have loaded drivers off a diskette that you had, not realising that you probably didn't need them.

Either config.sys, win.ini or system.ini will have the vxds, basically you would just need to remove the line, remember back up any files that you alter.

You can even restart the computer, bring up the menu pressing F8 and choose the custom startup where you pick what gets loaded (forgot the name) something like line by line...

Then you'll see what it's trying to load and where the problem may exist, either it will not continue or it'll display the error straight after it's loaded.

If still no go, other option is reloading the drivers, but it could be due to an incompatible driver.

306638 2004-12-23 11:25:00 Thanks for the input guys, it is greatly appreciated. Problem solved by removing the the mouse.drv=mouse.drv line from system.ini [386] [boot] section.

Again, thanks for all the input guys.

Merry Christmas to all of you.
