306262 2004-12-21 09:06:00 The celeron M is the moblie version of the desktop celeron CPU.
Speed wise is the celeron M comparable with the desktop celeron?

I am looking at purchasing a budget laptop computer. I could get Celeron M330 (which runs at 1.4GHz) or a Celeron 2.8 GHz CPU.

Purely on clock speed the Celeron 2.8 would be MUCH faster. Is there some architecture differences that mean these two CPU are much closer in speed that a pure clock speed comparison would indicate?

Celeron M330 1.4 GHz, 400 FSB, 512Kb L2
Celeron 2.8 2.8 GHz, 533 FSB, 256Kb L2

Thanks for any help.

306263 2004-12-21 09:12:00 Equal at many tasks i would imagine, But i suggest you try and find some real comparion figures on the net somewhere (and take all the opinions expressed here with a bucket of salt) Metla (12)
306264 2004-12-21 09:38:00 At most tasks it would be equal. You shouldn't notice any difference anyway. I think the Celeron M 1.4 performs at roughly equalvalent as Celeron D 2.6-2.8. Yes the mobile version does have different architecture to the desktop version which allows for it to have a smaller Ghz. As you may already know, less Ghz means less Volts, which means less power, which means more time for you to use it in between battery charges.

Personally, I'd go for the mobile version due to the great increase in battery life it will have.

306265 2004-12-21 10:04:00 probably a long shot but anyway, you know how the AMD users can use those Athlon-M cpus and put them in their desktop and get insane overclocks with the multiplier unlocked, is this possible with P4-M cpus? and get good overclock results? or would it even work? 306266 2004-12-21 10:11:00 Yes... do a google search for "Dothan overclocking" ... many very good articles there.

Lo.

306267 2004-12-21 10:24:00 If your not already aware, the Dothan is the new mobile processor (.. next generation Centrinos -but hey didn't that just come out not so long ago!?!? Go Intel with their R&D :p) with a 2Mb cache. Extreme overclocking there... ~sy~ (95)
306268 2004-12-21 17:35:00 The mobile celeron has more cache than its desktop alternative, and also uses less power. In pure benchmarks the desktop chip would cream the mobile version (as much as a cellery can, its a cellery afterall). The mobile verson should allow for better battery life, lighter laptop and wont get as hot. Unless your playing games or something equally funky then id get the lappy with the mobile cellery. For the same price as a lappy based on the mobile cellery you should be able to get a lappy with a mobile AthlonXP, which will runs just as cool and long but whoop the Celeron in terms of performance.
