306167 2004-12-21 03:38:00 A few months back, I bought a Gigabyte 6800GT. It had a meaty looking HSF and came with Doom 3. I discovered through my testing that the cooling system sucked. It really sucked. 100 degrees celsius under load. So I went and bought an Arctic NV Silencer 5, which arrived today. I've taken the original fan off, applied the thermal grease and everything, but the fan plug doesn't fit! :@@:

My card has a plug for a 3 pin fan connector. My cooler has a 2 pin fan connector. What can I do?
This is kind of urgent, as I need my PC by tomorrow afternoon. Currently the graphics card is sitting on my bench with the uncooperative cooler next to it. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

306168 2004-12-21 04:22:00 Plug one of those molex -> 3pin adaptors in and connect the cooler to that? I got a number of them with some system fans I bought. Đêĉî (6581)
306169 2004-12-21 04:23:00 have you checked over your motherboard?, mine has a 2 pin fan connector right above the agp slot.

also thats really weird that your gt gets that hot, mine sits at about 50 and rises to about 65 when under load, and thats with the stock cooler

The CARD has a 3 pin header on it. The actual fan wire is 2 pin.

lagwort- I don't have any such thing on my motherboard, unfortunately.

306171 2004-12-21 05:17:00 I'm not 100% on this but I think the 3rd wire on the fan connectors is just a monitoring wire, if I was you, i would get an old fan and chop the 3 pin connector off it about 3cm from the plug, work out which two wires on it are the power ones and solder on the two wires from the nv silencer.

I did this with a really quiet fan I pulled out of an old psu and it works perfectly.

I think power is black and red, at least thats what it is on my one

306173 2004-12-21 05:57:00 Surprising it doesn't have a fan speed monitoring wire, you'll probably have to disable that part of whatever monitor app you use, otherwise it will squawk incessantly .

You could solder on a two pin plug to rplace the existing one, get them from DSE, or make a little adapter with some wire, a 2 pin male and three pin female (the females spare hole would be redundant, of course) . Or, try drilling a small, blank, hole where the third motherboard pin can fit in to the existing plug .

See, right about there I would've taken the card back . Then again, is your case extremely cluttered? How is the airflow??

Gigabyte make pretty decent video cards, and I am surprised if the cooling was as bad as you've described .

You aren't overclocking it are you? Have you checked to make sure you have decent airflow over the card??

Lo .

306175 2004-12-21 07:32:00 I overclocked it at one point- which got me monitoring the temps. I noticed unusually high tempuratures, downclocked it to normal, and still got dangerously high temps. My airflow was good. I have a 90mm case fan blowing straight onto the CPU and graphics card. It's not just me who has this problem, high temps apparently plague all the gigabyte 6800gts. Thing is, by the time I got all the parts together to build the machine (****ing stylespc) the card was out of ascents 7 day no questions asked return period, and I really couldn't be bothered RMAing it and being without a graphics card for a week or more. I opted to just get an after market cooler instead, which would be more effective than any stock cooler anyway.

Anyway, I took the plug cover off and plugged the metal contacts straight into the header. I powered on my machine, the BIOS came up and starting POSTing, but the fan didn't come on. I powered off the machine after 10 seconds because I didn't want to risk damaging my card. The stock cooler would come on no more than 3 seconds after turning the machine. I have emailed Arctic about this, hopefully they will be able to provide an adequete solution.

306176 2004-12-21 08:16:00 I just found something out from looking a bit more closely at the stock fan connector. It seems that the 3 pin connector is a tiny bit smaller than a normal 3 pin connector- I tried plugging the gigabyte connector into a normal 3 pin fan header on my motherboard- and the gigabyte connector was too small to fit in the header. Wonderful. Any suggestions? Zygar (29)
