2004-12-22 01:18:00 | thanks Greg, but that's not what i wanted to know lol. read my first post. I cannot set jpgs for wallpaper in DISPLAY PROPERTIES. Sorry, I also get mildly p'd when a question can't be read intelligently! LOL - Right click on an empty space on Desktop, go Desktop|Browse, next to Files of Type click the drop-down arrow, select All Picture Files. Now all image types should be available to select. Helpful hint... ensure that the image you want is the same size as your desktop, or resize it in advance, eg 1024 x 768. It comes to the same thing as if you'd used the browser to achieve it.

2004-12-22 02:00:00 | No one is really understanding what Kindel's problem is - display properties>desktop is not giving the option to use .jpg files. I have the same issue on my Win XP computer and decided not to bother fixing it because it needs Active Desktop enabled which I believe is a security threat. I just use IrfanView to set my images as the desktop background. If you really want to be able to choose .jpg files in Desktop Display then try the suggestion on this page (windowsxp.mvps.org). Note that I have not tried it myself.

2004-12-22 05:02:00 | Also, i cannot navigte to that registry key, as it doesn't exist. The page in the link is for xp Pro i believe. I use Home. not sure if ccreating the key would break stuff further. I can get as far as ''policies'', but there is no ''explorer'' key in it. | Kindel (6640) | |
2004-12-22 05:37:00 | OK, have a look at this thread (www.hardwaregeeks.com), for more suggestions or jump straight to page two where TweakUI is mentioned: did you mess around w/ TweakUI? Under the Explorer section there's an entry titled "Allow Web content to be added to the desktop." Make sure that is checked. For me, when that's unchecked, I get only BMPs too. If you don't have TweakUI it can be downloaded from Microsoft's website here (www.microsoft.com).

2004-12-29 22:06:00 | thanks Greg, but that's not what i wanted to know lol. read my first post. I cannot set jpgs for wallpaper in DISPLAY PROPERTIES. Hello, I've been searching the web today and found this post because of exactly the same problem. I found that if I opened an image in Internet Explorer I could then set that as wallpaper BUT .... windows icons are then no longer transparent. To me it seems that something has interfered with the Windows XP ability to recognise file formats other than BMP as valid wallpaper. This manifests itself in the Display Properties only working with bmp files. I've been assuming it was something I'd done - but seeing your posts makes me wonder if it is something generic. My most recent changes are: a) I use an ATI 9600XT graphics card and have recently updated to Catalyst 4.12. b) I recently installed the latest MS-Internet Explorer update. How about you? Isn't it always the way, within minutes of wrIting this, I've found the answer (for me at least) on another board . . tek-tips . com/viewthread . cfm?qid=961312 . " target="_blank">www . tek-tips . com From that thread the following registry file entry worked for me: Windows Registry Editor Version 5 . 00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop] "NoHTMLWallpaper"=dword:00000000 Cut and paste this into a notepad file and name it something like 'fix . reg' . RightClick it and select Merge . For most people merge is the normal default . Personally I change the default to 'edit' - I prefer to know in advance what is going to be added to my registry! The webpage that I linked to in my first post above gave instructions on changing that registry entry but I guess your method may have been a little easier. :)
