306143 2004-12-21 05:05:00 But - the first one is only available at a DSE reseller in Taupo, so there is likely to be only one left NZ wide.

Second one is still available at several outlets.

306144 2004-12-21 05:41:00 If she's not looking for grunt, how about an AMD Semperon based machine. Socket A or 754. The bonus being that the socket A while limited can be upgraded to an XP+ CPU although their production time is limited, while the 754 can be be upgrade for some time to come. That way sonny boy can buy the CPU and extra ram if wants to play games.

Just a thought to throw in to the mix ;)

306145 2004-12-21 06:22:00 Thanks for the observations ~sy~. I've just been following up what she found - the DSE stuff certainly seems worth a look. Two issues: she is wanting to wait till after Christmas, which means the DSE stuff may be gone if it is clearance stock, and H & S are offering a deferred payment/interest free deal which I know would be very attractive to her.

Murray - interesting idea.

306147 2004-12-21 07:59:00 A similar PC at my shop, but without an interest free deal, is $940. That is more than the DSE one which is even cheaper.

That is a Sempron 2400, 512MB Ram, 80GB hard drive, CD-RW, 17" and XP Home. I am not trying to sell this of course, but indicating that in the expensive price of the system you are effectively paying the interest or even more.

Almost all "interest free" deals are this way unfortunately. Of course for many people there is no other way than paying it off bit by bit, and so there is no alternative to the inflated price of buying this way.

306148 2004-12-21 08:08:00 I personally see the interest-free deal as a way of 'reversed pyschology'. In a way, it is certainly attracting customers like her. Also, I would think they're making more money. What they apparently "lose"; they will make back, even in double. Am I making sense? Their price is so high that even with the interest free deals, they are still making twice as much! The stuff at DSE shouldn't be gone after Christmas. They've being sitting their for quite a while! ~sy~ (95)
306149 2004-12-21 12:24:00 I think DSE has the best deals for new PC's in NZ at the moment, both for Laptops and Desktops.

Check out store code XC5566-17

It is a fully upgradeable 2200+ Sempron processor, 40GB hD CDRW 17'' CRT monitor includes XPHome etc.

Price $797.00 inc GST they have the same model with a LCD screen for $900.00 odd

I have not seen anyone else able to offer a deal anywhere near as good as this one, and as an added benefit the warranties are all handled by your local DSE store, unlike your normal off the shelf PC where the retailer sells them then washes their hands of them...

306150 2004-12-21 12:32:00 hmm...My local DSE doesn't do there own servicing,Can't imagine any of them do, Machines from these parts are sent north.

Having said that,The DSE machines i have worked on have tended to be far better machines then the other "brand" name machines in NZ, I do wonder why everyone goes all silly over a low price though, I wouldn't touch it with a bus

Edit,I see you referred to warrenties, Not the actual servicing so ignore that if you please..

306151 2004-12-21 18:13:00 I'll certainly chase up the DSE deals.

Re: the interest-free stuff. Of course you are all correct, the store is still going to make their money, although I suspect what they really want is for you to go past the interest-free period, which is when the charges really start to pile up.

For my friend, the issue is that she can't get together $1000 in one hit, but she can probably manage $80-100 a month for 15 months, even though it would cost her more overall. The old story, the difficulty of getting together capital when you are in a dodgy financial state.

306152 2004-12-21 18:54:00 Wouldn't DSE do HP?.Worth a look. Cicero (40)
