306301 2004-12-21 09:36:00 Hi,

I have an old P2 400 that I want to make into an FTP server, just on my local lan (shared wirelessly with a neighbour) .

Can someone reccomend a linux distro to do this easily with, and if possible post a link to d/l it?

I have most of the latest, eg Mepis, Fedora, Mandrake, but all of these will be too intensive, and id rather run an old version of KDE/Gnome, than one of the other window managers . . .

Is Damn Small Linux any good? Or Vector?

Reccomendations please?

Is Damn Small Linux any good? Or Vector? For a file server, you do not need to install a GUI (KDE/Gnome etc) so this will mean your machine should be able to handle a text mode only install of a reasonably new distro. Alternatively, Fedora Core 3 comes with XFCE as GUI, which is a light weight window manager and you can use that in conjucntion with a server type installation. Having a newish distro means more kernel support for your wireless lan.

I've heard both DSL and Vector are good for older machines ... but a 400MHz isn't that old ... :p

306304 2004-12-21 10:48:00 Go on, you know you want to use Gentoo!

I got a Stage 3 install up and running on my P2 400Mhz w/256MB Ram in about two hours! It rocked!
From there, just:
emerge pure-ftpd

Done! If you really wanted you could emerge apache, samba, openssh etc, Otherwise there's the like of gcc-3.4 and my personal fav: Reiser4!

The installation guide for Gentoo is simply the BEST and once you've used it, I doubt you'll go back.

Cheers

306306 2004-12-21 11:56:00 Well, you may as well....
Stage3 install would be a good idea if you want to skip the inital wait for Bootstrap etc....

Just be prepared to be without your PC a short while unless you want to download Binaries of everything

306307 2004-12-22 09:07:00 P400 with 256M RAM should not be too much of a problem for most modern distributions - Fedora Core 3:
With GUI: P400 with 256M
Without GUI: P200 with 64M
