306791 2004-12-22 18:27:00 Hello all

I was wondering how do I make part of a jpeg transparent For a web page. Like .ico files or these emoticons to the right on this page.
I guess you would have to choose a different file format other than Jpeg to start with.
Cheers Ron

Hi Ron,

Jpeg's can not be made transparent. The only file format I know that can be made transparent are gif files. Certain software can make parts of your jpeg file transparent and save the file as a gif file.

306793 2004-12-22 21:01:00 Only .gif files can have their backgrounds made transparent.

If you have already created your image you can save as a .gif file in a graphics program and specify what colour is to be made transparent. Note that ALL instances of that particular colour will be transparent so it is preferable to have an image which has a background in a colour different to the rest of the image, if that makes any sense to you.

Not only GIFs can have transparency. The newer portable network graphics format also does transparency. PNG files have better handling of transparency but the only problem is that some browsers used to have trouble displaying them. It shouldn't be an issue now though, I'd imagine.

Ooops . Yes you are correct about that .

I have struggled with setting transparency in some . png files and find . gif files much easier .

306797 2004-12-24 09:36:00 Why not download The Gimp and use that??

Ive found MS Photo Editor (That comes with Office 97/2k/XP) the easiest to set Transparency thou.
...Admittedly thou The Gimp is free :-D

IE still sucks at it.

306799 2004-12-24 11:03:00 Gah. I didn't really want to name names, but it seems, as usual, the cats out of the bag. Yes, IE did/does suck in that department. To quote NZ PCWorlds' Mr. Palmer:

'If Internet Explorer was a dog, someone would have shot it long ago.'

Microsoft needs to take a good look at the inner workings of Internet Explorer and setting things right, instead of ignoring it and hoping it will go away, if they hope to keep their dominance in the browser market. I wouldn't hold my breath though. As for me, I'll stick with Firefox for now.

11:57 on Xmas eve, I'd better get out of here. I expect I'll have to pull a jolly, fat, red-suited dude out of my pot-bellys' chimney soon..

306800 2004-12-24 11:16:00 They need to trash it and start again. Unfortunately that means rewriting a good deal of the OS and MS apps as well........... oh! Yeah right, like that's going to happen in a hurry, I'm dreaming. A shame really. Murray P (44)
