306764 2004-12-22 06:53:00 Hi,

I will be co-locating two servers in Level 48 of the sky tower, and for this I need both servers in rackmount cases. Well, not need, but it is cheaper that way.

My question is: Can an ATX motherboard w/Socket 370 CPU (no PCI cards) fit into a 1RU case?. If so, does anyone know where I can buy two?

Cheers George

306765 2004-12-22 07:05:00 There's plenty of information on the Internet about making your own rackmount servers. Try searching for "make your own 1U", "make your own 2U", etc. A search seems to indicate that 1U is two inches (roughly 5 centimetres) in height, so you should be able to fit a heatsink/fan and RAM on the motherboard as well (both essential ;)). You can also got PCI doofaries that effectively allow you to plug in a PCI card at right angles to what you normally would... agent (30)

Agent,

PCI doofaries

Is this the proper name for these?

306767 2004-12-22 07:40:00 Don't have any PCI cards = Don't need doofaries

Will search, thanks:D

306768 2004-12-22 08:23:00 Basicly I have 2RU to work with. If I can't do it, I can use slimline desktop cases. This is $25 / month more.

I can get hold of a 2RU desktop case, two will fit into 2RU though, as it is very short. Rackmount is still MUCH preferred.

We can't afford a nonstandard motherboard etc, but I have certainly seen many ATX rackmount 1RU systems.

Please tell me that 1RU = 1U?!? I am 99.5% sure it does.

My friend has a rackmount server, I will ring him now and see if I can buy it. It's a PIII 500Mhz, 60GB of hard drives, 512MB Ram. Will certainly do the job I think.

Cheers George

306769 2004-12-22 08:27:00 No, of course a doofarie isn't the right name :p

I think PCI riser might be more suitable, but I'm not too sure.

PCI riser bring much usefull intelligence from Google including pci riser with 8" ribbon, useful sounding toy.

306771 2004-12-22 08:42:00 Well my search returned a PCI riser that tilted a PCI card 90 degrees, facing away from the motherboard. So I guess that a PCI riser is the correct term for what I was thinking of.

Interesting toy indeed, but it'd mean your other slots would be unusable :illogical

306772 2004-12-22 08:53:00 Now, back to the task at hand.....

I am honestly considering getting out the metal, welding tools, hammer ......

And making one myself. I could base it off the motherboard plate out of an ATX case.

The actual motherboard with CPU and RAM is about 1.3" high, so it will fit. Just need to stick in lots of little fans. Lucky I get them insanely cheaply, or it could be costly!

Might have a go tomorrow.

306773 2004-12-22 08:58:00 I'd advise that you make sure the dimensions fit exactly with what a 1U rack would normally be. A few millimetres out and you could have some problems... agent (30)
