2004-12-23 10:25:00 | Yep, thanks anyway though. Remember that my speed on the realm is great. So it's a routing / ISP thing not a connection thing. I'll get back to you after I've rung Telecom again tomorrow, and also Orcon. Cheers, George

2004-12-23 21:37:00 | I've got 3 more months to wait until I can leave Telecom without this evil $149 having to be paid.... So until then the crappy, awful technology that is ADSL will have to stay. Cable is great, but the $59.95 + $10 (modem) plan is only 5 Gigs :(. I can't handle that little traffic. But the speed and the 512Kbit upstream (drool) will be nice. As will the legendary 20ms pings. TelstraClear cable measures traffic much more realistically than Xtra ADSL. I'm not sure what the exact difference is but a 5gig cap will go a lot further with cable. Ping times 7ms to gateway, 7ms to gamers.paradise.net.nz, and 18ms to pcworld.co.nz :D

2004-12-24 02:57:00 | Oh my god. Those are the most amazing ping times I have heard with such a cheap (price-wise) connection. I'm on it ASAP, as soon as my 6 months are over (2 months to go). I am beginning to suspect that my 2Mbit JetStream connection is port-shaped, because I only get 256k on Bittorrent... Cheers

2004-12-24 03:01:00 | Maybe QOS is being implemented. Since pings and other ICMP packets are not very important, perhaps they are being given lower priority than real data-containing packets. :D | Graham L (2) | |
2004-12-24 03:10:00 | Only thing is its a 220KB/s pipe.... Even with QoS, he should still have brilliant ping times! I was getting wicked pings and when I'd set my PC's up sync with an Aus ISP Gentoo Server, downloads were awesome! Maxed out the connection every time!

2004-12-24 03:33:00 | Waaah :( Telecom says there is probably nothing they can do. They say the may try increasing my line speed, whatever that will do (its at 4412Kbps already). Perhaps they mean increasing the 2Mbit... But what about my ping times? They are so bad I might have to switch to 256K - I am suffering disconnection issues too, from servers (ie, downloads aborting + being disconnected from game servers). Average to gateway is 374ms. It used to be like 50ms. Average to NZ server is 502ms. Used to be like 80ms. Average to UK server is 731ms. Used to be around 190ms. What the hell!? Download speed (JetstreamGames) is around 500Kbps or 68KB/sec. Crap. I really hope they can fix it without "looking into upgrading our location", which means nothing will ever happen. Gulp, Cheers George

Since pings and other ICMP packets are not very important, perhaps they are being given lower priority than real data-containing packets. :D That might work, except that my "real data containing packets" are going at just as **** a speed as the ping packets :( |

2004-12-24 04:21:00 | The routing all over the globe will be because Telecom/Xtra and Testra in their devine wisdom have decided to give the finger to erveryone else including their customers by pulling out of peering agreements. That's where one ISP will route anothers for the shortest, most effecient route, on a quid pro quo basis. Now Instead of peering, it's any route that'll get you there including international, want to look at a website hosted down the road by another ISP, you could be going via Siberia. Crazy eh! Dumb? Not as far as they're concerned, if you remember that short term expediency is more important than providing the service expectation (built by marketing) of your consumers. The ping times will be because of packet queing rather than dropping which Telecom has been implementing over the past 8 months or more, but your's are positively awfull. Does the performance match up with any of the advertising rhetoric? I guess they're managing to put bums on seats at least, which should keep the Telecoms Commissioner happy and therefore off their backs. Sorry for the dose of cynicism, can't help myself, just don't know what is happening to my self control these days, I mean this is just plain old common or garden business pratices here after all, no worries :stare: Murray, You write these things far to kindly. For those who dont quiet get what you mean. TELECOM is bending the consumer over a desk again, and having a really good time off it. D.

2004-12-24 05:29:00 | Nor have I. I was upgraded on the 22nd from Jetstream Starter and have been really impressed with it. My pings on game servers have remained at the 50-70ms mark, and I love the download speeds. I've managed to chew up 800mb already though... I don't think I'm going to make it to the end of the month uncapped. :( | Zygar (29) | |
