306891 2004-12-23 09:14:00 Jack, did you miss out a zero there, 10mbps seems a bit slow if you are connected directly to the Modem. My guess would be 100mbps which is what I had before I put a wireless router in the way. Now I get 11mbps. theother1 (3573)
306892 2004-12-23 09:16:00 mind you, 10mbps has got to be way better than the dial up you were using. theother1 (3573)
306893 2004-12-23 09:49:00 No cable in Rotorua AFAIK .

Why not 100MB/s rather than 10MB/s then, most cards and routers can interface at that? Plus Telecom have trialed higher speeds so are cabable in some situation and conditions .

Just in case you were wondering what cabable meant, it's the new catch phrase for capacious capless cable capacity capability sans c*ap and I c*ap you not, K . :D :D

Thanks for the comments.
I am with Bliink. (by Ihug) on the 256 unlimited plan.Costs $49.95 per month.
My modem is a BELKIN external USB adsl. (No model number).($193 for M and filter)
I bought it yesterday from Harvey Norman. I had ordered a modem from Ihug but they have been buggering around with me for three weeks. I phoned them yesterday and got a very helpful lady who told me that I wasn't yet connected by Telecom and the modem hadn't yet been sent. When I told her that Ihug had told me a week ago I was connected she discovered that the person I was dealing with had not entered it in their computer. All apologies etc. etc. But they couldn't send me a modem before 3 January.
Guess what I told them to do with their modem. Anyway Ihug have given me the first month free. :D
Surprisingly I had it connected and running within an hour. I am more than satisfied with it and the speed. Telecom had told me I was in a borderline area.
It looks like my firewall was clashing with Win XP (SP 2). I had uninstalled NAV and still couldn't send E-mail. I hadn't realised the modem had a built in fire wall and when I found it,it was activated. As soon as I deactivated it E-mail came right. I may investigate further at a later date. Having too much fun at the moment. flying into sites that used to take five minutes to load and five minutes between pages.

306896 2004-12-23 16:57:00 Hmm ... 10 Mbps doesn't sound right. What do you get from this speed test here (www.nzadsl.co.nz) for the 500K test?

You should be able to monitor your usage via Telecoms monitor here (www.telecom.co.nz)

I ran the test and it reports my line speed at 275.7. Sounds pretty good as it's supposed to be 256.

306897 2004-12-23 17:47:00 ouch that's expensive for a external usb modem and yes the reported 10mb is the speed the pc is talking to the modem not the connection speed as you have found out......my modem, 'speedtouch 330' (xtra jetstream modem) reports a connection of 7.6mb but of course the download speed is at best 2mb...... drcspy (146)
306898 2004-12-23 19:01:00 Now now people, at no stage did he state which ISP, Telco or even WAN technology he was using .

In any case, he could be using cable, which can quite happily go at 10mbps, thank you very much .

Growly, you obviously haven't been following the saga of Jacks Broadband connection, which he stated at the beginning was adsl through Ihugs Blink . Next thing you will be asking why everyone is ragging him about Motherboards . :D

306900 2004-12-23 19:50:00 I had one problem that I wasn't warned about . When I got it set up I could not receive or send e-mail . Struggled with it all afternoon and eventualy found out my modem had a built in firewall that was on by default . It didn't get on with win xp . Switched it off and all was well .
Jack

By preference, and for more secure surfing, I would have switched off the XP firewall, installed Zonealarm or other recommended software firewall then taken the time to RTFM so you can get the adsl modem configured correctly .

Remember, a high speed connection + fast computer allows you to make mistakes much faster, and the nasty stuff can be downloaded & installed in the twinkling of an eye .

Cheers
