2004-12-22 09:55:00 | I know of a place in Auckland that gets ex-lease computer and hardware, etc. He also sells some of his stuff on TradeMe (http://www.trademe.co.nz) | ~sy~ (95) | |
2004-12-22 10:00:00 | Dang Skinner you should be ashamed of yourself ripping off old ladies. $200 for the task youve describe is way too much. A cheap second hand harddrive would easily suit the task or a brand new drive could easily be purchased for around $100, installing windows and mounting the drive isnt exactly a difficult job and you shouldnt be charging anywhere near $100 for that. In my opinion anything over $50 for the labour is a con. The whole task should be able to be done for under $60 in my opinion. 20gb is a hell of a lot of storage for an old lady, a second hand 2-10gb drive would be sufficent. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | |
2004-12-22 18:32:00 | Don't misunderstand guys. I want this done as cheaply as possible. The lady is my mates Mother so I don't want her ripped off - hence my original question. I am on the Shore...SY, a pm is on its way. Cheers for all the advice Skinner

2004-12-22 20:21:00 | In my opinion anything over $50 for the labour is a con. The whole task should be able to be done for under $60 in my opinion. 20gb is a hell of a lot of storage for an old lady, a second hand 2-10gb drive would be sufficent. Most of you are way off the mark, dreamers or have no idea at all. Why would you want to install a 2nd hand hard drive when as Chill says a new 40GB for $70odd or an 80GB for $90odd with a 1-5yr guarantee depending on which brand you buy as opposed to a trademe clunker with no comeback. It will be your neck on the line if the drive s**t's itself a month or two down the track, are you going to cough up a replacement if it does? The presumption that a lil 'ol lady only needs a 2-10GB drive is rubbish My mums 69 & she takes digital pics flatout, records TV proggys & writes them to DVD & transfers her Camcorder movies for me to edit for her, she's already filled an 80GB & looking for another shortly As far as $50 for a format & install, get real. Unless you're a schoolboy doing a perky it should be at least $120 if not more Installing the OS is only half the battle It actually takes longer to bring the OS up to spec There are 6yrs of windows patches, Internet connections & email to configure Latest Video drivers, directx, adobe reader, Spyware protection, Winzip, Photo & file viewers, .pps viewer etc, etc,Programs to install, files to transfer from the old drive if it's still accessible. And that's assuming you have all the necessary drivers for the machine at hand & don't have to go scouring the net for drivers for obscure modems & sound cards etc. If you're going to do a job, do it properly & be paid accordingly If you're doing a favour for a mates mother, fair enough do a cheap job ($$ wise, not quality wise) But if you are doing it as a paid job which is what some of you are offering get out of cowboy mode & into the real world & do a complete quality job for a fair price. I've always found, doing cheap favours will quite often come back & bite your ass big time.

2004-12-22 21:20:00 | Well said, PcNut. Reformatting and reinstalling Windows is the easy part. It is the rest of the job reinstalling everything else that takes all the time but if the client is willing to do that themselves then they can save themselves a bit of money. The thing is, if they can do all that then why can't they do the reformat and Windows reinstall themselves?

2004-12-22 21:32:00 | My pricing would be cost of the drive +2hrs labour . The Windows patches can be applied in 10 minutes, thats no biggie,,Same with anti-virus and whatnot,a few minutes at best, Drivers tend to be an issue, but Video card drivers are kept close at hand,The rest can generally be grabbed from the manufacturer in a few minutes at best . ,And if the data on the original drive is accsesable then they can be backed up,Which comes in handy for the obscure Motherboards and modems . . . . . But i usually just install a new modem rather then shag around looking for drivers . . . . Setting up email and making an internet connection . . . . hmm . . . . . less then a minute . . . lmao . Especially as you just export the email account and address book . . . . The most time consuming part is doing the back up,As i like to salvage as much of peoples data as i can,and if the comps a mess it can take a fair amount of time,But once that Windows cd is in the drive its all downhill racing . And generally i leave it up to the owner to install there own programs .

2004-12-23 08:32:00 | I would put it at drive + 2 hours. 1/2 an hour to put in the drive 1 hour to install win98 1/2 an hour to fix other problem that come up during the job. 2 hours at $40 - $50 = $80 - $100 for a little old lady i might do it a bit cheeper.
