306920 2004-12-23 08:02:00 Well, I moved to the Jetstream Plus 2Mbit plan. And it's not looking good.

Everything seemed slower except downloads, which were 256k speed, occasionally bursting up to 85KB / sec or so, but REALLY unstable (based on JSG speed test).

My line speed is about 5000Kbps, so that's not the problem.

Ping times were the worst though. My gateway ping became HIGHLY unstable, with a low of 264ms and a high of (GASP) 9463ms. Yes, 9 seconds. It used to be 40-50ms.

Ping to an NZ site that used to be around 90ms is now between 600 and 10438ms. Yes, over 10 seconds. It would stay at that 10 second mark for about 20 mins, and then drop back down to around 600.

Doing a traceroute, I found the problem. It's getting routed all over the place. To this NZ site, it was going through global gateway, over to a .net (US, Aussy?), back into NZ and to the host. Odd, that it changed. It's now 12 hops, used to be 7.

What the hell is up? I rang telecom, I am meant to record ping times and routes over 24 hours and report back then.

I am making this post because of the shocking things I have discovered after 3 hours of Ping Plotter graphing at 30s intervals.

Cheers, George

306921 2004-12-23 08:42:00 I take it you are with Xtra? Keep in mind the line speed your router reports means very little.... Do traceroutes show a specific bottleneck or is it slow across the board? Ash M (46)
306922 2004-12-23 08:58:00 what do you get when you ping gamers.paradise.net.nz? (via command prompt) eat soap (124)
306923 2004-12-23 09:05:00 Around 90ms, better than my gateway, how does that work???

And no I am with Orcon (but not bitstream). I need Orcon for the static IP addy.

I am on the 2MB plan with JetStream and using Paradise as my ISP. Downloads come through at a stonking 258KB/s and ping times in most gaming stuff is around 30-110ms depending on the servers.
Web access to all points is very responsive as well. Sounds like an ISP issue to me.

306925 2004-12-23 09:19:00 90ms!!! Thats TERRIBLE. I got 144 and im on dial-up. My friend on telstraclear 256k cable gets about 20-30 ms. I suggest that you switch to cable as you live in welly. I'm not trying to start a telecom bashing thread, but just suggesting that its the best option for george as there 2mbit plan is actually 2mbit the whole time. Its only available in welly and some parts of chch, so thats why you don't hear that much rav about it. Almost everyone at the wellyLUG has cable with Paradise, and they love it! eat soap (124)
306926 2004-12-23 09:28:00 The routing all over the globe will be because Telecom/Xtra and Testra in their devine wisdom have decided to give the finger to erveryone else including their customers by pulling out of peering agreements. That's where one ISP will route anothers for the shortest, most effecient route, on a quid pro quo basis. Now Instead of peering, it's any route that'll get you there including international, want to look at a website hosted down the road by another ISP, you could be going via Siberia. Crazy eh! Dumb? Not as far as they're concerned, if you remember that short term expediency is more important than providing the service expectation (built by marketing) of your consumers.

The ping times will be because of packet queing rather than dropping which Telecom has been implementing over the past 8 months or more, but your's are positively awfull. Does the performance match up with any of the advertising rhetoric?

I guess they're managing to put bums on seats at least, which should keep the Telecoms Commissioner happy and therefore off their backs. Sorry for the dose of cynicism, can't help myself, just don't know what is happening to my self control these days, I mean this is just plain old common or garden business pratices here after all, no worries :stare:

306927 2004-12-23 09:38:00 I've got 3 more months to wait until I can leave Telecom without this evil $149 having to be paid....

So until then the crappy, awful technology that is ADSL will have to stay. Cable is great, but the $59.95 + $10 (modem) plan is only 5 Gigs :(.

I can't handle that little traffic. But the speed and the 512Kbit upstream (drool) will be nice. As will the legendary 20ms pings.

I had a Telstra guy come round, and see if we could discuss a "Custom plan" that would work for my business. It seems that Telstra's idea of a "cost-efficient" plan was $3500/month 2Mbit frame relay. No thanks :(

I could step up to the 10GB/10Mbit/1Mbit plan, but *gulp* it would go in a week if not less at that speed.

What to do....

Cheers George

306928 2004-12-23 09:42:00 Hello George. I'm on Telstra cable and the 2 meg system is nice. I justified it on the basis that it is $1 a day more than my 20$ dialup at Paradise....
