306840 2004-12-22 20:55:00 I've been reading the various threads on Gentoo here, so I'm thinking I might have a crack at it and load it up on a spare HD. What I'm wondering though, is what the performance differences are between the various stages. I mean, is there really that much real difference in performance and optimisation between say, a stage one and stage two install?

The Gentoo site makes it sound like it could take a *lot* of time to do a stage one install. Is it worth it, or should I just go with the stage two and save some time and effort? The point of the exercise will hopefully be to learn a lot more of the inner workings of linux so I'm kind of counting a stage three out at the moment.

Any comments/recommendations?

306841 2004-12-22 21:02:00 if you are new to gentoo, try stage 3 it doesnt take as long as stage 1 or 2.

stage 1 is only more grunty if you have changed the defaults.

Even if you start from stage 3, you do learn a lot.

If you start from a stage 3 tar ball, chances are that there is something new in the package and therefore it will be recompiled anyway.

Ah ok. Thats good to know, thanks. Now all I have to do is wait for the last 3/4 of the universal iso to d/l. :P
