308017 2004-12-27 11:51:00 I've just got a digital camera for Christmas and am trying to download my pictures onto the computer, but my camera is not being recongised by the computer! It is Windows XP, and I tried another USB cable in it to check and that doesnt seem to be recognised either, is it the socket that could be broken? If so is this easy to fix and is it expensive? PLease help katiemolloy (6685)
308018 2004-12-27 17:13:00 Have you installed the driver from the disk that came with the camera? Some cameras get picked up by windows easy enough, but maybe yours is one that requires a 3rd party driver. If you give details of what make and model the cam is, perhaps one of the photography-minded people here will be able to point you in the right direction.

I think the chances of your USB ports being broken are pretty slim. Do other USB peripherals (printer, whatever) work ok?

308020 2004-12-27 22:58:00 Are the particular USB ports you are plugging the camera into working? Does anything else USB work in the same ports? Dak (6610)
308021 2004-12-27 23:07:00 XP should natively detect your camera when you plug it in, however you must have your camera turned on first and often set to the "Play" mode in order for XP to see it. Have a look at your digicam manual for what setting it must be on for downloading images off it.

As mentioned, does any other USB device work in that socket? If you are using your case front USB sockets, there is a possibility they weren't connected up to the motherboard during assembly.

308022 2004-12-28 05:19:00 simple question, is the camera set to the computer function? and then turned on? Prescott (11)
308023 2004-12-28 10:02:00 do you have network shares if so try this
right click "My Computer" choose "Manage" in the right pane choose "Storage" choose "Disk Management", is the camera ( it will say removeable drive) listed in there and does it have the same drive letter as one of your network shares. If it does right click on the drive that represents your camera select "change drive letter" you should be ok from here on in.
