2004-12-26 07:34:00 | Specifications: 1.4Ghz AMD Thunderbird 896mb SD Ram 100gb+ Free Hardrive Space GeForce 4 Ti4400 Video Card MSI DVD-Burner Asus Mobo Brand new Belkin 3 Port Firewire Expansion Card Sony Digital 8 Handycam DCR-TVR740E Pal Background I just got this new Sony Handycam for Christmas, and have no previous video camera experience, although I am very good with computers. I purchased a 90min Digital 8 Tape for the camera, and a Belkin Firewire 3 port Expansion card today, which I was able to install fine. I want to record things with the camera (duh), transfer the recording to the computer where I can edit out parts, add in parts, chop and change bits, add background music, add text and maybe some fade effects. I then want to burn the recording on a DVD-R in as high as possible quality (needs to be much better than vhs quality), so I can store them. Dad has offered to buy the needed software through the business, so suggest the best. Search came up with nothing. Capturing: The firewire expansion card came with Ulead Video Studio 5.0 DV which I installed. It has a horrible layout, but I did manage to get it to capture. Only problem is, the video that it makes is completely ass quality, whether I choose MPEG1 high quality, AVI DV High Quality, or AVI Compressed High Quality. Comes out severely interlaced, and low quality even though its like 100mb per minute. Also even when choosing MPEG1, the resulting file is a .avi, which of course wont burn on a DVD video disc without having to be reencoded. Any better capturing programs out there that will produce me a mint quality picture, in mpg? Am I doing something wrong perhaps? Editing: As I said, I need a program not too newbie, but not too advance that will allow me to edit out parts, add in parts, chop and change bits, add background music, add text and maybe some fade effects. Suggestions? Authoring I have Nero Burning Rom 6.something which can burn everything under the sun, would you recommend using this to make the DVDs that I will be burning? Thanks

2004-12-26 08:00:00 | Try a later version of Ulead Video Studio - they were up to 8 last time I used it, 2 mths ago. I didn't use it for video, just making a clip comprised of photos and music, burning a SVCD. I found it easy to use. Also, is your version a 'lite' SE or similar? I got a SE version with my digital camera and it is so crippled by missing features I can't use it for anything.

2004-12-26 08:39:00 | Thanks Zippity, I shall have a very good read. And wotz, thanks for the suggestion, but I'd rather not use anything by Ulead, just horrible :).

2004-12-26 09:23:00 | I have used tmpgenc in the past and found it a little involved but when you consider what you are trying to achieve then some effort needs to be put in to learn it and the results are excellent. This dvd authoring program I used could add chapters, create menu with your own designs for the templates. You can edit out individual frames and then convert to iso for burning with nero. www.pegasys-inc.com There is a good 'howto' here and link to a trial version www.afterdawn.com

2004-12-26 20:03:00 | What version of Windows have u got?? If XP, Moviemaker 2.1 is OK for capturing. It saves it as wmv, and can also send edited video back to the tape thru firewire. So, once u edit whatever send the edited stuff back to the tape u recorded onto. And the latest nero can read wmv now..Well 6.6.03 can. Nerovision 3 , which is part of Nero, isnt too bad. Its got a few background pics/templates...and the dvd burning is OK. I've used it a few times. No prob at all. Only prob u may find is how to burn so other DVD's can play it. Not just 1 or 2.
