307866 2004-12-27 06:54:00 Have just tidied up a similar computer for a grand daughter. Had same problem with floppy, so I had to buy a replacement floppy drive (XH5308) from Dick Smith for $29, you may have to modify the power supply cable as the power connection on the DSE was a couple of inches further away and the existing cable would not reach. Into the power supply for the CD ROM put a Drive Power Splitter Cable (X2604), then from second female run a Drive Power Adaptor to the floppy. In the BIOS set the Boot sequence as you want. The motherboard used either 4 X 64mb SIMM or 2 X 128mb DIMM, it had one 32MB DIMM (PC100), got hold of a 2nd hand 128MB DIMM and fitted to no 1 DIMM, tried 32mb DIMM in no2 DIMM but it was as loose as a no12 shoe on a no 6 foot although the holder had never been used. It worked OK in No 1 DIMM. Suggest you install the freebie Everest Home Edition, get details of the motherboard and from internet get mb manual if you don't already have it.
Re your resolution, have anybody been playing games?, some games of that era will only run in a low resolution.
In my case the previous users did not run a tidy computer, so I had to spend some time dumping old mail, part programmes, temp files etc. Run Defrag, Scandisk, Memory clean, Reg Clean about 3 or 4 times. The background of the Desktop was almost invisible.

307867 2004-12-27 07:18:00 do you really need a floppy drive these days?, but mind you it is an old system and it may not boot from cd, so it pays to have one. Prescott (11)
307868 2004-12-27 07:26:00 Dude, you can't FIT 256mb of ram into a P166 . And besides, that is the equivalent of upgrading my machine to 4GB!

These have 72-pin sockets, and the maximum amount you can fit in them (if they have 4 sockets) is 128MB . I have ONCE seen one with 6 sockets, a server, and it could take 192MB . The chips only go up to 32MB you see .

What you do need I think, is a new hard drive . I think it might be corrupting itself .

Try buying a 10GB or so off Trademe for ~$20 .

George,

Need to do some history man,

EDO 72 pin does come in 64 meg sticks mostly Ecc but rather reare in NZL .

6 and 8 edo slots where not uncommon in the last of the edo machines particularly compaqu enabeling 512meg .

10gb drives on these old machines CAN LEAD TO SERIOUS PROBLEMS as many of them are limited to 8gb in their bios . You then end up needing things like EZ BIOS Ect .

Many new users are not fammiliar with these old programs .

You can get good 6 gb Seagates for around $16-00 With a guarentee .

They are a safer bet than many of the used 8 and 10 gbs at the moment, because many of these drives have come from X-box and Have been unlocked .

These drives can have issues later .

You can get Guaranteed sets of 4 x 32 edo for $40-00, less if you hunt and take risk .

307869 2004-12-27 07:38:00 there are still a couple of apps that demand I have a floppy, but aside from that, i see no need.

I have a couple of deskpros with 8 slots
but to be fair to george 64 meg edo is so rare as to be not worth mentioning . I have only ever seen 2 sticks of it in 10 years odd

Yes 64 edo sticks are very rare, but there are many references to them in earlier manuals .

Will your deskpros run 233mmx or even 200mmx?

I find they market as excellent linux learners with 8 x 16 233mmx, 4 to 6 gb hdd and a C/D rom as most of them have onboard lan .

They will also run 8 x 32 and I am told 8 x 64 .

64 edo does come up on Ebay occasionally and quiet economic for boosting old machines .
