2004-12-25 10:35:00 | drb1, that may just be the problem, except my paswords are all tehre, im really confused Auto updateing is an evil thing. This is why. Time now to learn from this experience, allways: Keep a seperate list of all non criticall/High security P/word (Mine in note pad, in an obscure place). Keep a seperate list of book marks in rich text or note pad. Or some other secure backup that the auto updater/down loader will not destroy. Personally all auto download update features are off, nothing gets net acess with out asking (Except 2 minor units required to run brouser effectively but brouser can not auto acess). D. Edit, Why in note pad or RTF. So that any O/s can acess the data on the HDD, also why I avoid NTFS, this removes the NTFS acess issues. D.

2004-12-25 10:42:00 | i shall follow by your example, to a point i like ntfs because is stops other people from aseccing files in my directory, without me having to encript/decript said files each time i want to view/edit them. as of now i have turned off auto update do you also have autodownload for windows update tured off?

2004-12-25 11:00:00 | fair enough. personaly though, i think, if im going to do it anyway, i should just let it do it itself. and as it turns out, thats not always a good thing. im too lazy, as you may have gathered.

Once you have had to run around fiquer out what it broke and how to fix it a couple of times, you will see that there is less work in having it turned off in the long term. Or you will run a M/s controlled machine set as M/S wants. Totally lazy approach, you do not fit this mould as you have already started to use other applications and come here, so manuall updates may be the way of the future for you. D. |

2004-12-25 12:55:00 | You have a point, and a great one at that. Ill take a less lasy aproach as far as windows updates goes, ill make it auto download, saves time, but I will, atleast from now on, install manually. Fourtunatly, I am well aware of how dangerous the future of m/s controled, DRM encumbered software is.:horrified Let us pray the future doesnt turn out as bleak as they will it to be.

2004-12-25 14:10:00 | I have had crashes / improper shutdowns cause this. It is because of data getting corrupted by the system halting or resetting while data is being written. If these two things you mention, both which are often caused by this, have happened in a recent time period, you may have a hardware/software problem (possibly driver related) causing data corruption. Memory could be a likely culprit. Then again, it might just be random windows screwing up, as it does ;). If it happens again soon, remember that 2nd paragraph though...
