2004-12-26 02:03:00 | Hi, I want to buy a new AGP video card and am looking to spend between $100 - $200. I have a 2.4 GHz pentium 4 with 496 MB of RAM running Windows XP. I want to be able to play Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 but I'm not worried about getting really good performance and don't mind playing on lower settings. I am looking at a GeCube Radeon 9550 with 128MB DDR RAM for $158 or a GeCube Radeon 9600 pro with 256MB DDR RAM for $200. I would like to get the cheaper one but I don't know how well they will play these games. | ad_267 (6193) | |
2004-12-26 02:41:00 | Hi, I would go for the 9600 pro, better card then the 9550 card. As for performance you get what you pay for. The 9600 pro will perform better then the 9550 card. If your willing to wait a bit longer and save up some more money you can get way better. p.s. check out pricespy.co.nz for good prices. ;)

2004-12-26 05:15:00 | 9550 because you can softmod it to 9700 speeds, but is the 9700 better than the 9600pro, that is the question. remmeber that the more ram it has doesnt mean it is faster/better

2004-12-26 05:17:00 | whoops, thats only for the 9500 not the 9550 that you can softmod, sorry | Prescott (11) | |
2004-12-26 06:38:00 | Well if you can softmod a 9500 and turn it into a 9700 without any problems ie.,is it easy, safe or any issues that may arise from it,why not that would be good. Or you could get a 6600gt AGP for $381.38 on www.pricespy.co.nz Which I am sure people would agree is better then a 9500/9550/9600pro/9700  6600gt would rock for your games and is a newer card with new technology compared to the older cards with older technology. Plus when you upgrade again it want be as old as those other cards to sell on to someone else.

2004-12-26 07:20:00 | OK, thanks. Does anyone have either of these and/or know how well they perform on games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2? | ad_267 (6193) | |
2004-12-26 07:31:00 | If you can push your price up by 20-$50 you could get a Radeon 9800SE. They are good because you can softmod (run a different dirver, no flashing involved) them to a 9800 pro. The best value for money IMO. See http://forums.overclockers.co.nz for more info on how to softmod. | eat soap (124) | |
2004-12-26 20:24:00 | dont go for the 9800se, it has slow ram, all SE cards are crap, i should know becuase i have one. the 9800pro or 9800XT is the way to go, but it is a tad out of your budget so you might need to have a look on trademe, i got my 9600SE for a hundy | Prescott (11) | |

See http://forums.overclockers.co.nz for more info on how to softmod. im sure you can flash all the SE cards, why on earth would ATI especially make a seperate line of graphics cards that have a slower memory interface? it would just be too expensive for them, so im guessing that they will just lock the rest. eg, my 9600SE it probably actually has a 128bit physically...but its just running at 64 so possibly if i flash it to a 9600np that might do the trick, but realisticly that may not be the case........ |

2004-12-27 01:15:00 | Do some research on the 6600gt 128mb card . Go to www . overclockers . co . nz www . jetstreamgames . co . nz www . overclockercafe . com www . 3dxtreme . net To spoon feed you a few of heaps of websities talking about this great new card . 9800pro would be the minimum I would call a decent upgrade for todays highend new games . And remember you have the graphics engines of Half Life 2,Doom 3,Far Cry that will all be used in new games . Oh and dont forget STALKER is yet to be realised . So do some research on that game!!!
