You guys still using any old tech?

We still use fax or we used b/c we are now on UFB even if the fax modem works it might not be that safe to send the image of a credit card or passport thru the wire. Ie - some overseas stores which also have a web presence but they wanna address fraud issues with international customers. Althou they are slowly embracing Paypal. Foreign embassies / travel bureau's when getting Visas/rail passes. And also that some organisations just don't communicate with email with anythint that is specific to the person's account.

1361502 2013-12-03 00:36:00 If the old technology still works and you haven't got much in the bank there is no reason or incentive to replace. There is too much pressurized selling trying to persuade people they "need" updates, more expensive devices. It's a deplorable side of society that tends to mock anyone using older but still adequate equipment. coldot (6847)
1361503 2013-12-03 00:52:00 Alot of emotive wording in the article, doesnt seem at all unbiased :groan:

I call BS
I dont know of any households using a fax machine, yet they claim 14% , & claim 1/4 off ALL households using fax in 2006. BS
Yes there are a few homes with faxes, somewhere out there I guess, I just find that 2006 figure hard to beleive.
Do they include MFC printers, with built in fax, thats never used ? Or just stand alone fax machines ?
Small business's working from home, yes, but average families: not many.

Was there even a question about fax machines in the last census ?? Perhaps people were just ticking stupid census questions with any stupid answer ?

"Clinging" , how about just 'using' devices that are still 100% functional.
many businesses still REQUIRE fax machines, so buy definition they are still CURRENT tech.

More BS
quote
"only 85.5 per cent of households having a hard-wired phone"
how is 85% ever "only", they are implying 85% is a minority
The correct wording is : Only 15% dont have a hard wired ph.

"One worrying figure to emerge from the census is that 24,135 households (1.6 per cent) do not have access to any telecommunication systems at home"
1.6% ....Big deal. Why is that a worrying fact. ??
Perhaps these 1.6% simply didnt want to tell BigBrother what devices they actually had, or just ticked any old box in the census. Thats just as likely.

Incidentally, our printer has fax functionality built into it, but we don't use it any more.

As for other old tech, the only thing I can think of is the barcode printer, which is still connected with a parallel cable. :p

Which I why I put this in the next line
"Yes there are a few homes with faxes, somewhere out there I guess, I just find that 2006 figure hard to beleive."
Do YOU believe every 4th home had a fax machine in 2006 ??

I retort with this, re the original article

1361506 2013-12-03 01:12:00 I have a fax machine at home but it is several months or even a year ago that I have sent or received a fax on it. I often use it as copying machine. Bobh (5192)

1361508 2013-12-03 02:16:00 We must be dinosaurs, we have a fax machine that now serves as a dust collector. It may send a fax once in a blue moon. As Nomad states, it can be very useful when sending highly sought after information such as credit card details. However, it is also a phone and a copier and the phone part is so useful if it rings just as I am coming down the stairs.

Incidentally, I still have one of those old cell phones that could hammer in a four inch nail lurking in the back of the cupboard. I did offer it freely to a builder who was bemoaning losing cell phones while working on a roof. He didn't really know me very well so possibly felt a little embarrassed to accept it.

1361509 2013-12-03 03:12:00 As all-in-one printers had fax, I would believe that - doesn't mean they all used it though.

Old tech, well I am rather attached to the landline, so yes I have old tech.
We have ordinary cellphones too, so again old tech.

1361510 2013-12-03 07:24:00 Our toilet is old school, haven't gone paperless there yet.
Still got a dot matrix printer, but it is quite a while since it struck a blow. (Those were good fast-starting printers though, no firing of jets of money/ink into felt pads before the first ink hits the paper, no warming up of fusers. )
