Forget the stick, you are still thinking like a nerd. Think like a regular user and go with the device. Convenient out of the box, turn it on and play with a user friendly UI. That is what regular people want and what regular people are buying, hence the speedy decline of the desktop PC market. Nerds are still needed for their coding and software engineering ability. Just not hardware or UI design. |

| 1361751 | 2013-12-09 04:56:00 | parts are able to be bought and installed individually. no need to buy a new computer when free linux and a $50 stick of ram is sufficient. second hand the ram can be gotten for much less, much less than your wholesale vs retail nonsense. the prices i quote are what joe is able to pay for today, if you get an SSD and your 7 year old pc shits itself in 6 months, you have an SSD already for your replacement. beit a barebones kit or the cheapest laptop. an SSD is a valuable investment Forget the stick, you are still thinking like a nerd. If you sell what ever to upgrade an old PC, and shortly after it fails. The person you sold it to will feel ripped off. Some people will be the nicest you could care to meet, BUT as soon as you add in money, and they feel you have sold them something thats now worthless after a short time, they can change and get real nasty, real quick. I've had it from personal experience, it actually got to the point I had to threaten to lay assault charges, and it was nothing to do with any work I did, it was caused from another person who supplied the parts for their upgraded Laptop. You also need to make up your mind what you are doing now -- plug the stick into any tv, it is now your computer. get rid of the box. You started this thread about upgrading older PC's, now you have completely changed your train of thoughts. :waughh: |

[ ok, we have now moved from talking about upgrading an old PC when it would be cheaper to just but a new one to taking a USB stick and plugging it into a TV to create some sort of big screen computer . . . I'll ask again . Why are you so bent on beating the dead horse that us the desktop PC market in the hope that you "might" revive a last gasp from something that has been surperceded by a more user friendly device? |

| 1361754 | 2013-12-09 06:07:00 | Why are you quoting DX websites? What happens if a customer requires warranty are you gonna take some weeks or you will be carrying inventory? Or are repiutable NZ stores unable to provide you the cheap prices? People don't want PCs . You're on some kind of crusade . We've got 2 PC cases given to us and haven't found a use for them . Both are dual core, 1GB RAM has a HD, we have spare keyb and mouses but no one wants them . There is a 23" LCD but they prefer to hook up a laptop there and their Xbox . If people did wanted keep using PC/laptop and they spent that much in upgrades as a contact I would say to them - they could have spent a bit more (if that) and got a brand new barebones system . If it cost $20,000 why not just get a $30,000 new car . |

| 1361755 | 2013-12-09 10:15:00 | for a bunch of geeks you lot are very unenthusiastic about technology. ive spent the last few months giving away all my old computer parts for very little ($1 PER psu, $1 per optical drive) the parts seem popular. just a few days ago i gave my neighbor a 65nm pentium dualcore with 4GB ram. very very very happy. with a dvi-vga adavptor ( OH NOES SPENDING MONEY ON A DEAD END COMPUTER) they will have use of an HD4850 geeks not wanting to upgrade and tinker for their friends is a joke A DISGRACE. not everyone can spend hundreds of dollars on a new computer or a collection of parts. $150 for some many is a huge stretch for one thing. THIS IS WHY $50 smart phones are so very popular despite their shortcommings. android hdmi sticks can be used on many recent computer monitors ; hdmi monitors have been on the market for many years now. GF'S BROTHER uses a laptop on a 42" tv on a desk, seen other's use tvs in such capacity. i remember many years ago buying a 900mhz p3 cpu to upgrade an older computer despite having a better one. this thread and the next 7 weeks using my sisters laptop while she is in asia may change my opinion of upgrading my e350 platform; might give my neighbors a hd6450 instead of a hd4850, get a cheap skt1150 mobo and a celeron and gradually upgrade it over the next few years. this laptop is an i7 with 8GB of ram with 2GB dedicated video. i have enough resonable psu lying around that i can take the 650W modular psu from my e350 system and still power the 7 sata hdds so thanks for the thoughts. you have both inspired me to no upgrade and to build a computer just to upgrade it. my upgrade funds are rather limited at $1.11 Per day - took quite a while to get the modular psu. it feels good giving away computers, especially to those who can be bothered to tinker with them. |
