| 1361739 | 2013-12-09 01:23:00 | I said it in the dialup days that it's about lifestyle and mobility to do a job fit, not the best. look at Japan and Singapore. I still think while.we have fiber demand will be in wireless the barriers just price. give a decent data cap on wireless price it better still more than wired it'll kick off. ... for the common end user. | Nomad (952) | ||
| 1361740 | 2013-12-09 01:28:00 | Merde, I think you might be overlooking a couple of very crucial points in your quest for retro fitted PC nirvana.. 1 - general public computer using habits have changed in the last 5 years so it doesn't matter whether you charge $100, $500, $1500 or more for a retro fitted upgrade.. Its the form factor that counts, not the price. People are buying tablets instead of PCs because they are convienient and easy to use. 2- The average punter barely knows what Windows is, let alone something called Puppy Linux 3- Maybe you should change your meds. Cheers. i very much like this post. 1.a. if it can do youtube without lagging EVER, whilst runnign a browser with a dozen tabs it should be fine. .b. my mum has a mini ITX pc on a tiny desk. www.aywun.com 2 The avarage punter stops carign when they know what the browser icon looks like. with drive icons on the desktop the more demanding users (ones who want to copy files) are able to find their way easily enough. 3- ill go eat some more raw cashew's eh. maybe you should visit the farmacy more. |

And if I do get any sort of lag its due to bandwidth.. or lack of. 2- Your mum has a tech nerd for a son, although that doesn't mean that she necessarily needs to know what is going on with her PC.. Thats your job. Just remember, not every mum out there has a nerd for a son or daughter and nor do they know or care what type of PC they are using. 3- most average punters don't "know" what the term "Web browser" is. They just click on that E thing on the desktop to get on to the interwebs. My last point would be that if a multi billion dollar globally recognized company like Dell can't survive selling cheap as chips PCs then how on earth are you going to "reverse" the decline of the PC market by retro fitting one 2nd hand PC a week for a customer..???? |

| 1361744 | 2013-12-09 02:21:00 | Middres, your pushing it uphill with a sharp pointed stick. Guess What -- I've just got confirmation of orders for a number of new Desktop PC's running i3's, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD drives, that will go out with a 3 year warranty, and all for less than your refurbished pricing (this is using your thinking of No OS or Labour costs). So who would want to buy refurbished with no warranty for more ? You have to remember, upgrading Old PC's will always cost you more in the long run when the older now obsolete parts fail and can no longer be obtained. |

Guess What -- I've just got confirmation of orders for a number of new Desktop PC's running i3's, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD drives, that will go out with a 3 year warranty, and all for less than your refurbished pricing (this is using your thinking of No OS or Labour costs). So who would ant to buy refurbished with no warranty for more ? are you still looking at the orginal $1000 i tossed around? how many usb ports? do they come with card readers? touchscreen? the school i went to recently upgraded their 300A celeron and pentium4 suites to i3 with 4GB ram. i would have gone with something heftier and multseated them with the multipoint 2012 license most schools have access to with the m$ package licensing. instead of 1 i3 comptuer per user an i7 and 2 gpus could have done 8 with ease. |

Lots of people like computers although that number continues to decline, lots of people also like small devices which happen to be more convienient. 2 - Why bother - far too bewildering for a lot of users. 3 - yes more than enough computers have been made for end users, but that doesn't stop computer using habits from changing over the years which is what has happened. 4 - Phones don't have to last for 4 years, they just need to last until the next new model comes out - so about 12 -18 months. If they do last for 4 years then that is a bonus. 4-6 years for a computer would be a reasonable lifespan, after that they just get slow and annoying. You can certainly upgrade but whats the point considering it would be cheaper just to buy a new computer or move to a new device. As I reiterate - Its not "price" that is stopping people from buying PCs.. Its computer using habits and the convienence of a portable device. You can argue the opposite till the cows come home but the rapidly declining number of traditional desktop PCs being sold to customers will continue to prove that you are wrong and very mis guided if you think otherwise. |

You figure it out ;) -- I run a business and like others here are actually in the right positions , so the prices you quoted are retail. A business purchases components at wholesale, then puts on a margin which is what you would pay retail. :) |
