1361729 2013-12-08 22:29:00 avarage user does not know difference between windows and linux

What a load of rubbish. I would venture to say 95% of PC users would wonder what on earth hit them when you sit them in front of a Linux machine.

i would venture to say that 95% of PC users who can identify that it is/isn't windows would be COMPLETELY CLUELESS as to how to actually fix anything if anything goes wrong on either of them.

also them more ram, more usb ports, card reader upgrade combo i have suggested emphasises the devices people are ditching PC for. $100 gets you these for any PC and ultimate edition linux on a USB stick in the back.

YES WE SCALE THE IDEA FROM $1000 BACK TO $100. because the real features are possible at even such a low pricepoint. the rest were gimicks. your phone probably has hdmi already.

This is getting funnier by the post.

So its gone from Installing a SSD drive, added memory, Graphic Cards, additional USB ports, Card Reader, a fullHD touchscreen, down to a few addins like USB ports and a card reader.

At $100 you wont even be able to get the SSD drive unless its 64GB or lower capicity, which was one of the main components you've been saying will be included.

The way its going you'll soon be paying a person to upgrade their current PC

1361732 2013-12-09 00:50:00 How much to add USB ports and an SSD to my 386? I want to be able to run Puppy Linux on it. 24MB of RAM is not too obscene, right? Agent_24 (57)
1361733 2013-12-09 00:57:00 USB ports huh . . ipads, other tablets I dunno who use USB on them . you might also wanna squeeze in a Bluetooth upgrade . . . and a WiFi card . and you still cannot drag the pc around the house or that bedtime read . Nomad (952)
1361734 2013-12-09 00:57:00 well to honest you could still get teh cheapest SSD on the market for $81
www.pp.co.nz

there are cheaper drives, but they are all msata

assume the have 1-2GB of ram

and install ultimate edition linux to the ssd and set the home directory to their old harddrive.

on my first XP machine the graphics card my parents bought me for my birthday (many years after we got the PC) cost $310, 256MB nvidia 6600 agp

around teh same time my future gf, now mother of my son, bought 1GB ddr1 for $225

both were considered valuable upgrades to aging computers.

a sub $200 upgrade that brings you greater IO options, and improved responsiveness of general computing tasks is incredibly good value.

oh and last time i checked a USB stick is solid state... USB stick = SSD LOLOLOLOLOL

is what like $30 for a 32GB usb3 stick? put puppy on it and forget about configuring a home directory, thats tonnes of space for the noob enduser.
my mum gets lost in linux and windows, she's been through 3 linux now and no longer asks for windows; she has used slacko puppy, xubuntu 13.04 and is now on to ultimate edition 3.7.

chances are the user already has more than 1GB of ram,

OH AND IF ITS REALLY OLD JUST PUT PUPPY LINUX ON IT, extra 512MB of sdram costs less than $60, can be gotten for less on trademe. modern internet browser you now has.

That sounds like a sales pitch from eBay China.

1361737 2013-12-09 01:11:00 Merde, I think you might be overlooking a couple of very crucial points in your quest for retro fitted PC nirvana..

1 - general public computer using habits have changed in the last 5 years so it doesn't matter whether you charge $100, $500, $1500 or more for a retro fitted upgrade.. Its the form factor that counts, not the price. People are buying tablets instead of PCs because they are convienient and easy to use.

2- The average punter barely knows what Windows is, let alone something called Puppy Linux

3- Maybe you should change your meds.

Cheers.
