1361689 2013-12-06 22:32:00 say you bought this computer then
www.trademe.co.nz

HP DC7800 Slim desktop.

intel DUAL-CORE 2.33GHZ,

4gb ram

80 gb hard drive

putting a graphcis card in it and some of the items i have suggested would flesh it out rather nicely.

Or you could spend the same money on a new system which would out perform that+upgrades for the same price.

IE: nz.pcpartpicker.com (everything but touchscreen and an SSD) assuming the CPU in the HP is a E6550, the 6600K is going to be significantly faster (as would any newer quad core), the previous generation A8 vs E6550 benchmark can be seen here: anandtech.com

Went the APU route because imo a quad core cpus will offer more performance as programs move to being multithreaded. Unfortunately I wasn't able to match up a i5 with an acceptable GPU within budget. You could go with an i3 (which would still be faster than Core 2 Duo stuff and is probably better at the single threaded stuff than a 6600k) but as I said before I would probably recommend against a dual core system. Sure you can get a Core 2 Duo system, spend some money on it and have a computer that functions just fine today but it doesn't really make sense to do that when you can get a completely new system for the same money that will outperform it.

1361690 2013-12-06 22:35:00 I usually haven't taught them at all - I'm usually based at the bottom of the cliff.

Nothing. FUD needs identifying.Indeed. And that's a whole new can of worms. At least your pwned PC isn't (necessarily) tied to your credit card....

MOST PEOPLE DONT CARE

a shitty anrdoid tablet or an ipad or some smartphoen garbage is enough for msot people.

any desktop made in the past 8 years with a few addtional components (SSD+RAM) flies like a beast

a laptop might need RAM+SSD+battery

more usb ports is just a nice touch. usb3 when possible really helps, a card reader on the desktop because thats what is possible.

so for the cost of a tablet or a phone $250, you have potentially doubled the lifespan of a valuable member of the family.

i smell the stench of techno-snobbery in this thread.

ill touch anything because im not an asshat

1361691 2013-12-06 22:41:00 $1000

$555

$250

Your margins seem to be shrinking ... :)

1361692 2013-12-06 22:43:00 1GB ram ddr1/ 2GB ddr2 ~60, if you already have 2GB its not worth upgrading unless your use case scenario demands it
32GB SSD $80, something bigger is not much more.
4xusb3+cardreader $42 (2x usb3 expresscard is like $25, 2xUSB2 pcmcia is not much less, 4xusb2+card reader is about the same price)

put ultimate edition on the ssd (19GB install) and set the home directory to the existing hdd

shrinking margins because i stopped caring so that i could illustrate a point.

the above components cost $180 so charge $250 and its almost always guarenteed to be a far better experince than even the best phone/tablet can offer, albeit at a desk (though these upgrades apply just as much to laptops)

$70 to install 3 components feels like theft to be honest.

also ommitted you'll not8ice are features such as bluray, fullHD touchscreen, windows8.1 license, new HDD

perhaps my initial estimate of cost : profit was a bit whack.

THE IDEA CANNOT BE KNOCKED

1361693 2013-12-06 22:54:00 A $250 tablet gets online, it does what most people want. If they are only going on FB, Youtube, Gmail, do they need anything more. And they want something that can be carried around easily around home and outside.

Why would average Joe want a PC these days ..
Why would average Joe not wanting new and flash ..
I gather average Joe prefer Win8 not b/c of the cons but b/c it's newer, it's what in trend. Win7 is finite. It's a matter of time.

Hey I still shoot film cameras, would average Joe do that? You can still buy film and develop film. You can get a print down, get a Photo CD. You can pick up a $50 film SLR.

Unless I am doing photography I am using less of my PC now and it's 5yrs old now since bought. It's so much faster to just google something or look up a video on Youtube and broadcast it to the Smart TV or use Mirror Screen mode and broadcast a webpage / online gallery to the Smart TV. Type up a quick email on the phone (or tablet). Go out with it and engage GPS.

Experience? People tend to want it to fulfil a task and for them to be mobile. Having a power PC at the corner of the room updating FB is old skool.

1361694 2013-12-06 22:58:00 avarge joe has pc/laptop already
is mostly happy with it

avarage

for half the price of the cheapest laptop on the market you can make what you already have perform much better.
Mirddes (10)
1361695 2013-12-06 23:05:00 If happy then keep on using it.
As for spending money on it. Instead of $250 why not get a new one for $400 at Warehouse Stationery. Sure won't be a power thing but it does what they want.

1361696 2013-12-06 23:09:00 spend more, get less.

less features, more money spent.

you have no idea how much difference a SSD makes when the avarage computer use is concerned.

my mum hated switching back to a HDD after 3 weeks of SSD use. complained about how slow it was. (now the ssd contains ultimate edition linux 3.7 and the hdd is /home)

why spend $250 instead or $400 you ask? 150 reasons...

1361697 2013-12-06 23:21:00 My 2007 2nd hand laptop bought in 2010 had 4GB. I guess one could add in a SSD as the main only drive for a performance kick. But many may he hesistant in spending money on a machine that already works and a machine that may be worth less than the SSD itself.

As for the PC, that's old skool except for the few.

1361698 2013-12-07 00:00:00 Those New WD black SSD/ HDD 2.5" combo drives would be perfect for laptops, 120Gb SDd + 1TB HDD in the same package. www.wdc.com

As to the wisdom of all this, some older PC's are worth the effort, some are not. In some cases such as DDR2 RAM getting upgrade parts at a reasonable price is difficult and brand new can work out cheaper.
There are plenty of upgrade kits available with MB/CPU/RAM at very competitive prices so for me personally if you can stay under half the price of a new replacement then you are adding some value but any more than that and I'd rather start over.

I have a several year old 3 core Phenom 2 720 black edition with 4GB of RAM that used to be someones gaming machine sitting here, forget gaming and it's still a very good machine. It would only need the SSD and a storage drive to make it perform better than many new machines. In this case it could be worth spending some money on, but the original $1000 you suggested? no way, that's new PC territory.
