I have had a lot of practice pontificating about the old days and how it used to be...as you may have noticed :D |

Every time it was mufti day, I was afraid of what to wear, dreaded those. Cheap sweat pants and sweat shirts / hoodies or jeans bought from .... Asia when we went abroad with family. None of that Levi, Rebook, Converse stuff ... ... Hmmm. I just bought granddaughter a new trampoline - she was devastated when the old second hand one fell apart. She was talking to me last night on the modern portable phone - while on the trampoline - with her soccer ball. Talk, bounce and kick all at the same time. She kept having to get off and retrieve the ball. Her conversation got progressively more breathless. Her other favourite thing is going to the beach, where you have to physically remove her from the water when she turns blue. She already has a scooter which is the other popular toy. However, she is good with the PC, she has a online site - forget the name, little kids games, from actual platform games, through puzzles and some "make" cakes, hairstyles and stuff. But that's what she does when she can't go out and play. Not instead of. As for the cheap clothes - they are ALL from asia now - or perhaps Bangladesh. What you want to pay for them is another matter - Farmers tend to be rather more expensive than KMart these days. I own 3 pair of shoes: Works shoes, jandals, and the sneakers I have had for around 29 years from Skellerup. I get these plastic bags at the supermarket, but they come in handy for rubbish bags, bags for putting garden produce in and giving to visitors. Paper? Yeah - remember they cut down trees to make those.... Unless you are all over 150 years old, people owned cars back in your youth too. And fridges. And TVs. Except TVs were super expensive and weighed a ton. You think if they were like they are now your grandparents wouldn't have bought one? Bet they would.... |

A decent radio cost a lot more than a garden shed, around 7 months of the average wage. The old mud resistor and valve equipped TVs certainly did keep a small army of TV techs busy. | R2x1 (4628) | ||
| 1362209 | 2013-12-11 04:00:00 | Back in 1950, the word 'plastic' hardly existed as a noun, it was a term used to describe a pliable substance. Before then, at least in the UK, almost the only 'plastics' we had was Bakelite and products made of celluloid like sidecar windscreens, and cellophane wrapping. In fact there were many products made from cellulose, including paints. Then we were hit by the plastics explosion of cheap goods coming in from Hong Kong, "Empire Made" plastic toys and goods that lasted all of 5 minutes. |

| 1362210 | 2013-12-11 04:12:00 | The "Poverty report" that was released last week by Dr Russell Wills said that many children did not have 2 pair of shoes. When I was a kid in the '40s & "50s I never wore my one pair of shoes unless we were going to town. I remember the pain of a cold and frosty morning giving my stubbed toes grief. But then, we were tougher then I think! www.youtube.com Ken  I don't think any of us primary school kids ever wore shoes, including for rugby. Time has healed all that and my toes have recovered ... |

| 1362212 | 2013-12-11 05:35:00 | Back in 1841, Bakelite was never heard of, not sure why I mentioned it, apart from some might find it of some interest. | Cicero (40) | ||
| 1362213 | 2013-12-11 06:02:00 | Does anyone know what the definition of the 'poverty line' actually is in NZ? I tried to find it on the web but I can't find an actual definition. I don't have a link, but I think I recall hearing it on the 'wireless' the other day when coming home from work in my 'horseless carriage'. :) I believe the definition is something along the lines of "less than 60% of the average wage"... |
