I am thinking along the lines of working for the National IT Health Board, or even companies that produce software for doctors and other health professionals. I believe I am quite inclined towards programming at this stage. HTML and CSS is a good place to start if you only want to do front end design. If you want to get more in to the interactive and functional side of things you would also need to be good at OOP (JavaScript) and MVC, so being familiar any of the following languages... Java, Ruby on Rails, PHP, .Net and development technologies such as Restful, SaaS, Node.js will also be an advantage. As to the amount of study you would need - most likely a minimum of one year full time study with a minimum of 40 hours per week. There are no part time courses in web design or web development in this country that I'm aware of. They are not cost efficient to run. Your other option would be to do a Degree in Computer Science which takes 3 years. If you wanted to do a bit of research into what it takes to be able to write any of the codes mentioned you could have a look at: CodeSchool.com - Has free tours for an over view or full access to paid tutorials with monthly or yearly fees, Codecademy.com, www3schools (great reference site) or Lynda.com to get an idea of what is involved before you decide. The site has a vast range of tutorials covering every coding language and bit of software available. The tutorials are very thorough. Good luck :) Other very good sites are mozilla foundation. They build and maintain the JavaScript libraries. jQuery.com for all documentation and information on jQuery APIs. I would also suggest checking out the Orionhealth.co.nz site under the careers or graduate sections as they have a lot of information there. |
