1475241 2021-02-24 18:22:00 A friend had “Geeks on Wheels” come to check her laptop over a couple of years ago.
They installed Eset with a 2 year licence which is due to expire near the end of March.

Geeks on Wheels now want to install Malwarebytes instead.
They called her recently about this, and as she had been scammed by people purporting to be calling from Spark about 2 weeks prior to this call, she called me.

The Geeks call was genuine as I checked their website and indeed they are changing their offering to Malwarebytes.

My question is which is better Eset or Malwarebutes both are not cheap or just stay with Windows Defender
I just use Windows Defender and that seems to be ok.

Note we are both on NZ Super so one has to watch the pennies LOL (if you are old enough to know what pennies were).
I know this antivirus topic was raised before

Nod is far better. Stick with it.
As for Geeks on Wheels, in my experience they can be pretty terrible, had a customer once who'd used them first, they had not found his issue but were coming back to wipe his (unbacked up) business PCs and reinstall.

I found the issue, his modem had been hijacked.
No wiping or reinstalling required. They also had the cheek to charge him over $200 for this diagnosis....

1475243 2021-02-24 20:07:00 If on a tight budget , stick with Defender.
New Malware & viruses gets past all of them .

1475244 2021-02-24 21:15:00 Eset for sure. Malwarebytes like some others these days are adding all sorts of bells and Whistles that many people don't use.

If you have Internet Security (the one with the inbuilt Firewall) the 1 YEAR renewal for that is $59.43

If you want slightly cheaper you can downgrade it to the Straight Antivirus (but would need to uninstall Internet Security first), and the renewal for that 1 year is $49.52.

(know these prices off the top of my head, I sell enough of it) :D

To downgrade you would have to call Chillisoft (the NZ Distributors) and change the Licence so you only get charged for the AV not IS.

As for Geeks on Wheels, in my experience they can be pretty terrible 2nd that  Some of the jobs I have had to go to after they have been - :groan: Simple fixes and the person who arrived couldn't do it. Mind you they do have a high staff turn over.

BUT as 1101 posted "If on a tight budget , stick with Defender". Its not as good but its free, and DONT what ever you do install Crap like Avast - Its more like Malware these days.

Edited: Had one company the other week, I had installed Nod32 on all the Computers, it stopped dead in their tracks the recent hacked sites from loading. (the people were moaning they couldn't log into sites they use all the time) Where as some other AV's didn't. Wordpress was hacked and thousands of sites were infected.

1475245 2021-02-24 21:33:00 In this day and age...it's better to "spend" on end-point protection... whilst Defender does an adequate job, it is not as good versus an offering such as ESET.

Stick with ESET, she will not regret it.

1475246 2021-02-24 22:20:00 Eset is only $40something to renew each year. Almost as cheap as dirt.... piroska (17583)
