1479218 2021-08-10 22:45:00 The dumb thing was the mothballing and decommissioning parts of Huntly to appease the “Greens”.

Huntly could originally provide more electricity than the nine Hydro Stations on the Waikato River put together.

Ahhh yes, once we had engineers who could calculate future needs.

Bob Weir was general manager at Genesis for eight years before leaving in 2013
The coal-fired Rankine unit took several hours to turn on.
Weir spoke out,-he believed the crew at Huntly "just simply didn't have the notice to do it".

The Rankine unit had four turbines. One had been permanently shut down during his tenure, but three others were still going.

"They just simply would not have had time to turn those units on," he said, after having spent more than 3 hours in the dark in his Hamilton home on Monday night.

In December 2012, Genesis Energy placed one of the four Huntly Power Station 250 MW units into long-term storage.[8] The second coal-fired 250 MW unit was permanently retired in June 2015[9] after being placed in storage (with a 90 day return to service) in 2013.[10]

In February 2021, a third 250 MW unit was brought back online to assist with drought and gas shortages and made available until September 2021.[11] Most of the coal it is burning is imported from Indonesia, with much of it coming to Huntly by truck from Ports of Auckland, while some comes by rail from the Port of Tauranga.

Personally, I would have thought those in the industry would have known you can't just spin up the generators at the drop of a hat and for some reason the third 250 MW generator is only available until next month.

The reason for that eludes me but probably the Resource Management Act or something equally daft. :groan:

And they should be made to wear Lycra and ride bikes. ;)

1479223 2021-08-12 10:33:00 Er we had hail that day, and a high of 8 degrees.
I was cold. Even with no power cut.

i'll bet it was much colder in the cold spell a month or so ago.
