1480146 2021-08-29 23:30:00 Any recommendations for good water filters? Is it better to get one that's installed in between the sink, or just get a dispenser and order the big blue refill containers?

Have noticed lately the water has been tasting a bit funky where I live and have been buying it in big bottles instead.

1480147 2021-08-30 00:02:00 I have a sediment filter in my pump shed but then we are on tank water trickle fed from the town supply.

How often do you want to have to change filters will give you some idea on which option suits you.

1480148 2021-08-30 00:44:00 How can you be on tank water if there's a town supply?

Or a better question might be if you had a town supply, why the tank?

Pick the townie...

We have an allocation of 1800L per 24hours for our 10 acre block, there is a council locked restrictor on our water meter hence the need for tanks as I can pee faster than the feed from the pipe to the tank.

This quite a common occurrence on rural properties.

Been a townie but always a country boy at heart, and no I don't listen to country or western music :yuck:

Next question. Why an allocation as opposed to help-yourself? Are they concerned you'll use too much compared to those in suburbia?

Even though we're on town supply, we went whole house sediment and carbon filters (Purtec WH-60). Did this after they put chlorine our water. We tend to go through the filters every 6 months and you should see the state of the sediment filter when it comes out...it's starts off pristine white and ends up a muddy brown.

We decided on whole house, as after chlorine was added, the bathroom smelt like a swimming pool. Just adding it to your drinking water wouldn't remove this effect.

1480152 2021-08-30 01:47:00 Where are you psycik. We are Napier and went whole house last December. What a difference! I am one of those who gets an itchy rash from chlorine and for years, SWMBO had to put creams etc on my back. All good within a couple of days.

1480153 2021-08-30 02:08:00 We use this:

www.puretec.co.nz

Have changed cartridge once so far, it definitely stops the manganese sludge Napier gets.

It's not chlorine.
Its old age.

I lived in Auckland for decades, me, husband, son - who gets bad eczema never had this issue. neither do thousands of others there.

he did after we moved. So does my brother now, and aged SIL.

Alpha Keri lotion works.

Napier has hard water - alkaline. And often gets sludge in the system, I wish they DID have proper treatment, I miss Aucklands safe and PH neutral water.

1480155 2021-08-30 02:38:00 The type of filter depends on whats in the water, how badly the water is contaminated & and what you want to remove .
Any filter is better than none , but getting the correct filter isnt that simple.

I used to have a 2 stage undersink, separate ion exchange & carbon
Then went to a distallation machine : very slow(many hours) & actually required extra filters to remove chlorine
Now just have a basic carbon undersink filter . May not be the best , but good enough for Ak tap water .

Carbon filters are cheap , worth a try and might get rid of nasty tastes .
