Hi there, I am a Cartographer by profession.
Your best bet is freeware called AccuGlobe 2004. About 12MB download.
You draw different things on different layers. Then you can make streams, tracks or buildings visible/invisible at will. Areas are automatically calculated for polygons. I've only had a brief play with it. It's reasonably similar to MapInfo (costs plenty) which is what I use every day.
If you ever want your map used in other programs without redigitising the lines and polygons, it will export/import common formats. If you want accurate paddock areas, track lengths etc, I recommend drawing your paddocks over a georeferenced orthophoto (a photo that has been "rubber sheeted" using contour data, to take out distortions). If you need to discuss with me further - contact me: ross@forestrymaps.co.nz

308554 2005-01-03 09:19:00 Ross,I would suggest you hit that edit button and remove your email,if the window of opurtunity is closed then ask a mod to remove it.

Bots are indexing this site 24 hours aday, and very soon your email addy will become part of google......

.....Thats a bad thing......

Now that's language I understand :D However at the place I work we call MapInfo "the dark side" ;) Having never used/seen MapInfo I couldn't really comment any further however. There is a woman in our team who has joined us in the past year and she's a longtime MapInfo user and often talks about how much better it is than what we use. We just all have a go at her (and she's been limited to one mention of "MapInfo" per week :p

308558 2005-01-04 23:59:00 I am also using Tumonz for all property information, need to have Property Boundaries module installed. Its quite good but maybe ask for a trial first to make sure it does what you want.

Good luck

308560 2005-01-05 03:43:00 "Lands and Survey" used to produce maps in 1:50000 scale which showed all the property boundaries. Is the term "cadastral"?

Farm land often had fencelines and hedges shown, and paper roads, too, just to confuse you.:D

How many thousand acres did you say? Square miles?

Of course L&S have been privatised, so ... :annoyed:

As far as I know LINZ and/or Terralink (The old DOSLI/L&S) hasn't been privatised... still a govt dept, but run more like TVNZ... even worse I suppose ;)

308562 2005-01-05 04:33:00 Hi Prescott. Re Tumonz..... you need the basic programme and then the boundary add-on. Modest prices really. Have a look HERE (sal.neoburn.net)
for the various add-ons available.
