| 308090 | 2005-01-03 02:56:00 | Fixed it by following the advice I got below: AVG 7 E-mail Scanner Configuration A comment on the free edition of AVG 7 E-mail Scanner configuration . When you install AVG 7 and check the AVG Control Centre E-mail Scanner option, as the install procedure advises, you see the message "E-mail Scanner is fully functional" . I'm not sure this is always necessarily correct . I believe AVG 7 E-mail Scanner option creates a proxy server on the PC passing outgoing mail from the email client to the proxy and onto the ISP POP mail server . Incoming mail enters through the AVG 7 proxy server and onto the email client . After installation, if you are having trouble sending or receiving email, I offer the manual configuration instructions below to properly configure AVG 7 E-mail Server with Outlook Express, Mailwashter Pro and the free edition of Zone Alarm . After some online advice, this worked for me and my machine is now working perfectly . I believe the full version of AVG 7 contains a wizard to accomplish this task . I'm running Window 98 SE Record your original email server setting as a back up . Open Outlook Express Tools menu / Accounts / select email address / click Properties button Server tab will show you the POP and SMTP server address i . e . pop . something . com smtp . something . com Advanced tab will show you the POP and SMTP port settings POP port 110 SMTP port 25 You may use more than one POP server, record these also . i . e . pop . mail . yahoo . co . uk Right click AVG icon in systems tray Launch AVG Control Centre Select Email scanner Click Properties Select Personal-Email scanner in the drop-down selection box Click Properties button Select Servers tab Select POP3 option Click Modify button Select Connection (top left) Select Fixed host option Enter your POP mail server address recorded at beginning i . e . pop . something . com Write down the port number in the Additional settings i . e . 10110 Write down the E-mail client POP server setting This will be the AVG proxy server setting i . e . 127 . 0 . 0 . 1:10110 etc . Activate this server check box should be checked Click the OK button Select the SMTP option Click Modify button Select Connection (top left) Select Fixed host option Enter your SMTP mail server address recorded at beginning i . e . SMTP . something . com Write down the port number in the Additional settings i . e . 10025 Write down the E-mail client POP server setting This again will be the AVG proxy server setting i . e . 127 . 0 . 0 . 1:10025 Click OK If you use more than one POP and SMTP server, you will need to add them as additional items . However, with one ISP connection you will probably only use your ISP SMTP server even if you collect email from additional POP servers . i . e . Click Add button Select the Server type i . e . POP3 Select Connection (top left) Select Fixed host option Enter your POP mail server address recorded at beginning i . e . pop . mail . yahoo . co . uk Enter the port number in the Additional settings i . e . 10111 Note this is as above but incremented by 1 Write down the E-mail client POP server setting This will be the AVG proxy server setting i . e . 127 . 0 . 0 . 1:10111 etc . Activate this server check box should be checked Click the OK button Click OK If you do not wish AVG to place the certificate notice on each email, click the Configure button and uncheck the Certify mail check boxes on incoming and outgoing mail . Note, do not uncheck the Check mail boxes . Click OK Click OK Close AVG Control Centre Outlook Express configuration If Outlook Express is you email client program Change the mail servers and port number in Outlook to the AVG proxy settings for each email address . POP 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 port 10110 SMTP 127 . 0 . 0 . 1 port 10025 If you use more than one POP and SMTP use the incremented port numbers as above for the appropriate email address . You will need to reboot your PC to allow Outlook Express to see these changes . |
