| 308457 | 2004-12-29 02:28:00 | Hey, I'm going out to buy an upgrade box tomorrow and want to know two things 1) Realistically will I see much difference between a Semperon 2200+ and a Semperon 2400+ (massive performance is not an issue. Its going to be a linux ftp box not even running X, but a recent distro all the same *tries his hand at gentoo*) 2) Assuming I'm not running X, and the only real services I will be using is ftp and sshing into the box for administration, will 256 DDR suffice or should I bite the bullet and go for 512? 3) I want to (see above) use Gentoo. Where can I download the base ISO/Boot disk to do a Stage 3 install? Ash |

We're talking 1/10th reduction in time for compiling, so if you're doing a stage3 install we're talking about saving a possible 6-7 minutes maybe?! If that! You could run that box off 32MB Ram if you really want. Ive got a P2 400Mhz w/256MB Ram that I use for http, ftp, ssh, samba & IRC and its fine... On top of that half the data is encrypted using slightly more CPU time to decrypt it, but it doesnt really seem to care at all aye! mirror.pacific.net.au mirror.pacific.net.au mirror.pacific.net.au mirror.pacific.net.au www.gentoo.org Enjoy Chill. |

No, but there would be some pretty heavy data transfer going through it (gigabytes at a time, it's going to be on a 3 or 4 person WLAN) |

These units are only being replaced because they are over five years old written down and there is a vague possibility of a reliability issue many of them are also EX lease. lease expireed = new one, excellent value for what you wish to do. Unless you get server spec PSU and CASE fan running 247 will lead to early failure of home psu/fan's. D. D. |

| 308462 | 2004-12-29 03:47:00 | Mine is on 24/7 though and is fine?! I had an Athlon 300Mhz running 24/7 for 119 days before rebooting it and about 4 months & two reboots later upgrading the hardware to my current P2 400Mhz. Why would a PSU fail? |

Chill Some of the PSU sold with "HOME user systems" are not all they should be. Unscruplious retailers, Ect. You have the knoweledge to avoid this, some dont. D. |

| 308464 | 2004-12-29 04:29:00 | There were just old PSU's that were with the PC and are somewhere around 8 years old now :D Knowledge? I wish.... |

Most of the failures I have had seem to be the new ones, P4 rated 350/400 watt 18 months, dead.???? D. |
