308129 2004-12-27 23:21:00 Hi
I have Compaq Presario and i want to format my disk and install win98. currently im running Xp Home edition.
How can i format it.
can this be done the usual way (insert startup disk and format c: then install win98 by booting it) or are there any special steps to be taken.
Bcoz there are no driver cds supplied with it.

308130 2004-12-28 00:36:00 Done this a few times with pressarios
Most drivers are available on Compaq's website
Make a list of all your hardware listed under device manager & collect the drivers before you format
No point using one of the driver backup apps/wizards available, as the XP drivers will be no use for 98.
I just formatted C & away I went.
Depending on which filesystem XP is using a normal 98 boot disk should do the job
You will of course still lose part of the drive if the original OS installation files are stored on a hidden partition (if it has one) If it does & the OS was 98 it should have all the drivers on it
What model Pressario is it?
I believe there are managers that will delete the hidden Compaq partition but I've never used one.
Also do yourself a favour & install 98SE not 98 as many programs won't work on 98 but will on 98SE

308131 2004-12-28 01:51:00 The Model is S6010AN and it has REcovery Partition.
So your saying that i should backup my personal data, right down the list of drivers needed and format the disk the usual way. i didnt get this (You will of course still lose part of the drive if the original OS installation files are stored on a hidden partition (if it has one) If it does & the OS was 98 it should have all the drivers on it) could you plze rephrase it.

308132 2004-12-28 02:30:00 It means most Compaq/HP/Dell systems have a hidden partition on them, so u can reinstall XP, if you have to. BUT since you'll be reinstalling 98 and reformatting that partition for the XP install will be wiped completely.

(Well this MAY happen. Altho, no point in installing 98 even if the restore partition remains, after formatting). You might as well delete it, as the drivers in the restore/hidden partition may or may not work with 98 anyway).

Never to be seen again. Well, I think Pcnut is trying to say is, take note of what the drivers are called, (not back them up), before u format, as you'll have to redownload every single driver (if 98 doesnt install the driver), off the HP site. So, whatever u have in the case will work. All you would have to do is, backup email addresses u may have, take note of any passwords u have, and also backup documents (if any) you've typed, if u want them.

I would change the bootdisk to cd in BIOS and boot from the cd. Then type setup to format / install 98.
