I'd rate those chips about the same, with a slight edge to the P3 1ghz... I think a new AMD Semperon + cheap mobo run for the same price it would cost you to pick up one of those though.

309227 2004-12-31 09:35:00 p3 cpu is the better but the ram is slower and there is very limited upgrade path. i would go with the duron. tweak'e (69)
309228 2004-12-31 09:45:00 I would go with the P3, because early AMDs were known to run relatively hot. ~sy~ (95)

309231 2004-12-31 10:04:00 in that case go P3. tweak'e (69)
309232 2004-12-31 18:14:00 The cheapest is the best buy. The difference between them is negligable.

309233 2005-01-01 00:33:00 I benchmarked a Duron 1200 using Norton Utilities 4 when they first came out and the best I could get out of it was less than a well tuned PII450. I still have the snapshot of the screen if you want to see it.

In real use though, it does run faster, especially in multimedia. Don't worry about the heat output, todays heatsinks can easily take care of that.

That had to be one sad duron 1200 rig since a duron 1200 could go toe to toe with a p3 1000 and cream it in some applications.
and I'm an intel fanboy (but a realistic one)
