309015 2004-12-31 19:07:00 Thanks for that JJJJ,

I'm getting a bit tired of people on this forum slagging off those who are trying to help... yes take note Elim. I assume that you own a 19" LCD that you run at 1280x 1024 res and that you've got really good eyesight.

There are all sorts of 'retards' in the world and I'll admit that I've got more money than sense most of the time, however the problem for the sight impaired regarding viewing web pages at higher resolutions for me is not so much the text size (which can be changed in display properties), but that all the other bits are much smaller. For instance the little 'page number' tabs at the bottom of each thread end up about 2mm high at 1280x 1024 res... hard enough to click on even if you've got good eyesight and a steady hand.

GF put it nicely and was right about the number of pixels being able to display at 'non native' resolutions on LCDs, however for some reason (don't ask me... I'm a retard remember) some LCDs do a very good job of displaying text etc at non native res. In other words you might get a 'cheap' LCD that doesn't display text well at the native res and an expensive one that displays better than the cheap one even at non native res.

Yes, a 21" CRT might suit a sight impaired person better, but then of course you might not be able to fit anything else on the desk... I assume this is one reason why people buy LCDs even if they want them to perform like a $5 CRT.

309016 2004-12-31 22:27:00 I have both LCD [el cheapo] and CRT monitors. For a person with eye sight problems I would strongly recommend a large [19 or 21 inch] CRT monitor. Use large text to suit. IanS (924)
309017 2005-01-01 01:10:00 gidday,

I've used a 17inch crt monitor, and currently use a 17inch lcd. ($700)
and I'm very happy with it.

both screens will happily work at the resolution you choose to be
comfortable with, I had a wee bit of trouble with washy font colours,
at lower res than than sweet spot on the lcd, but it was easly fixed with
a free tuner you can download from the microsoft site.

I have read and feel its true, that a 15inch lcd gives a viewing size,
equiveliant to a 17inch crt, and a 17inch lcd will give a viewing size
equivelant to a 19inch crt. (the lcd screen felt like a paddock when I
first starting using it)

The lcd screen is sharper and a more accurate picture, however tends
to degrade slightly, if veiwed from the side, whereas a crt gives a softer
picture, and doesnt change much, in viewing from the side.

My personal recommedation would be a lcd screen, it uses less power,
less space, and apart from the vewing angle, the picture is great.

best of luck,

Robby

If you would like to try the solution I proposed then you might see why it is stupid.

* Display Properties - settings tab - change to your LCD's native resolution
* Click the advanced button - general tab
* Change '96 DPI' to 'Custom setting' and select 200% or what looks best.
* Reboot

Things should be looking much bigger and you can tune it later, all the while keeping it at your LCD's native resolution. Also make use of the appearance tab, change icon sizes etc.

You should never have to resort to lowering the resolution from the native resolution.

If you insist on buying a < 19" LCD to run in 800x600 then why not just get a 14" LCD or 15" one?

309019 2005-01-01 06:15:00 People buying 19" LCD monitors and running them at 800x600!!? That is the most retarded thing I've heard this year. What is the point?!! To waste money? To make your $900 monitor perform like a $5 CRT? More money than sense. :stare: :stare:

You could try running it at it's native resolution and increase the DPI to some large percentage in Display Properties.

Some people with sight difficulties have not yet come to the point of needing the massive Acessability icons and split screen.

800 x600 on a 19" 21 " with largest text can serfice for now.

These people know they are going blind, they dont need it slapped in their faces any earlier than nessecary.

Used Projectors with 40"-100" vairable screen sizes may be an option for these people also.

Good used projectors and screens can be obtained under $1000-00 some times.

Hence firfox is very good for any person with sight difficultys as it offers a much greater range of text adjustment and simple add and immage visable/non-visable controlls.

Edit

JJJJ,

Pity you had to shout. but at least you were shouting where needed.

Have you looked at, considered any of the projectors.

Your favorite supplier had a short deal on some new ones at $1500-00 a while ago.

Those 30" medicalls are great but, $ OUCH.

The big Appel LCD win compatable are cheaper than 30k now, have you checked the us site.

309020 2005-01-01 19:15:00 Sorry Elim- you just don't get it and I'm beginning to wonder if you own an LCD .

I spent a hour last night setting the res on mine to 1024x 768 (the next up from 800x600), went through every adjustment that I could find . . . fonts, font sizes, DPI in display props, also I have Firefox so changed the font appearance settings in there .

Sure, for someone who is sight impaired you can make some of the fonts bigger so that at 1024x768 they look similar size to running it at 800x600, but that's not really the problem .

There is no way that you can alter things in web pages . On PF1 the log in boxes and all related text become approximately 1/3 the size at 1024x768 res . Even if you've got decent eyesight it would be a strain to read them!

Sites like the Herald end up taking up 2/3 the width of the screen instead of filling it, so you're no better off there either and all text in the site menus is considerably smaller .

I've gone back to running my screen at 800x 600 and my advice remains the same, if you're buying an LCD make sure it displays text well at 800x 600 or ask if it comes with a free magnifying glass .

You what?

That has to be the most cack-handed advice I have read so far today.

here,I'll fix it for you.

If you are looking to buy an LCD and cannot easily read text at the res the screen is designed to display at then BUY A CRT.

Well really, the very idea of buying a $800+ LCD to run it at 800x600 is ridiculous, sight issues or not.
