308999 2004-12-30 20:40:00 Hi,

I have installed both AVG and Ad-aware on my friends system. Both programs are fully updated, and have been used to remove all spyware and viruses. I have done several scans, and each time the scans come up clean. But I still get a windows error carrying a message like this:

Downloader.Purityscan.M (and .E) Trojan Detected. Please run AVG for Windows to remove.

I can't find this using AVG. Does anyone know how to remove this for good? There is no signs of it in the registry.

309001 2004-12-30 21:36:00 Where does it say it is? eg.. c:\windows\system\jbekjhge.exe

What windows are you running?

Download and run Ccleaner ( www.ccleaner.com ) to clean out your temp folders and Internet cache in case it is residing in there.

309002 2004-12-30 23:58:00 Disable system restore then run AVG in safe mode. I would also recommend downloading and running Stinger (vil.nai.com) as, although that trojan is not on its list I have found it very good at picking up things that AVG have missed. FoxyMX (5)
309003 2004-12-31 00:04:00 Could I advise against turning off restore, unless you definitely know the trojan is in one of the restore files. If anything goes wrong, with either attempting to clean, or something the trojan does, then there is nothing left to go back to. pheonix (36)
309004 2004-12-31 00:45:00 Purityscan.B (and M) cannot get onto your system by themselves, it is likely you have installed some other (free?) software that has them inside. As long as you have that software on your PC it may be automatically repairing/reinstalling the trojan when it runs.

You may need to use the 'official' www.purityscan.com uninstaller to get rid of it (no guarantees though).

Also you might want to upgrade to better AV, I'd recommend TrendMicro (1) or Symantec/Norton (2).
