308897 2004-12-30 09:04:00 if a system has PC2100 and it is swaped for the same size of PC3200 will it improve performance?? robsonde (120)
308898 2004-12-30 09:07:00 if it the motherboard can run it at 3200 then yes. tweak'e (69)
308899 2004-12-30 09:09:00 Depends on whether it supports PC3200 or not. Some mobos only support 2100 or under. Not any higher. Higher CPU speed may also make things a bit faster as in booting Windows, if thats what u mean. I know CPU speed helps when installing something like XP. It doesnt take as long as slower CPU's. 308900 2004-12-30 09:14:00 BTW this is some what of a theoretical question......

what if the system in question was a well knowen brand of laptop, would you expect the system to come with the fastset RAM the board could support??

308901 2004-12-30 09:15:00 No, the cheapest they can get in bulk. Rob99 (151)
308902 2004-12-30 09:18:00 Depends on the balance that particular model is striking between price and performance. Some will, some wont. A computer system is a whole bunch of different things working together, and each task you do, will only run as fast as the slowest component being used. Increasing the speed of the memory will only have an effect if this is the bottleneck. More often than not it is, however things like disk access, bus speed and networking speed are also common bottlenecks. ICW (6719)

normall the ram with match the cpu bus speed. some top end models may use higher speed ram and i doubt any decent brand name would do an elcheapo and chuck the cheapest thing in.

308905 2004-12-30 10:23:00 Theoretically yes... Noticably - No.....

The HDD is the bottleneck so get a 2nd one or a 7200rpm HDD. RAID would make things better!

Chill,

Can we get sw raid to give us a real inprovment in a laptop with 5400rpm HDD????????
