309708 2005-01-02 02:31:00 I am thinking about changing my cpu to an athlon 64 from a p4.
Would it be worth it?, as i just use my computer for gaming and the net.
Does Athlon 64 have anything over the p4 as far as those two things go?.
My p4 cpu is 2.8ghz Northwood and i have 1gb ddr,GF fx5700 256mb agp card.
Which athlon 64 cpu and mobo should i go for, Any help would be great.

309709 2005-01-02 04:05:00 I doubt you will see a huge improvement unless you buy one of the more expensive A64 chips and motherboards.

If you are into games, upgrade that graphics card first.

309711 2005-01-02 04:11:00 Any AMD-addict will say yes and "harass" you until you accept it. :D I don't think so myself... it's not so improving performance but more wasting money. Your not going to notice much difference (in my opinion). I believe what you have now is bloody good and theres not much need for an upgrade. Probably get more satisfaction donating it!

Rest assured -someone will come over exaggerating that it's twice as good... ;)

309712 2005-01-02 04:14:00 I was just thinking of starting to "harass" chuckley1 but common sense is a better alternative... HadO (796)
309713 2005-01-02 06:13:00 Na. Go for a new GFX card. Like a 6800GT or X800pro VIVO eat soap (124)
309714 2005-01-02 06:18:00 The difference is measarable when benching,it won't be of any real advantage in the real world though.

Ignoring the entire aspect of different brands your only going to get a noticable improvement when doing a much larger upgrade.

The old rule of thumb i've seen touted about is to double the power of your cpu, I think in todays market aiming for at least a 1ghz improvement is a good target....

309715 2005-01-02 06:19:00 You'd be unlikely to see much performance improvement (if any) over what you currently have. Use the same money on a decent video card.

309716 2005-01-02 06:52:00 What improvement do you think you can expect by swapping you M/board and cpu with 64 bit system? You are still going to have a 32 bit O/S and other software.
Your new cpu is still only going to run at 32 bits.
A large expenditure for minimal improvement.

309717 2005-01-03 03:54:00 wont be too long untill more os's and programs support 64bit, and probably in like 3 years there could be 128 bit :) Prescott (11)
