309858 2005-01-02 09:24:00 This problem looks similar to another one posted just before but with a Linux twist.

I have a dual boot system that boots Windows XP Pro of one disk and Fedora Core 2 off the other. I connect to the internet via a 56 k external modem through Paradise.

XP connects to the net and works normally.

Fedora connects to the net but no web surfing works.

I've added the permission to browse through the firewall and even turned the firewall off, but no web sites will come up.

I've had Mandrake working through the same modem on the same PC before.

Any thoughts why Fedora won't connect to web sites??

309859 2005-01-02 09:34:00 I would have thought a successful connection to the net would automatically result in browsing.

What does you /var/log/messages file say about your connection?

309860 2005-01-02 09:39:00 What happens if you ping websites?

ping -c4 www.google.co.nz

ping -c4 64.233.167.99

309861 2005-01-02 10:30:00 It could be something to do with the route.

When I tried Mandrake I could get it to establish a connection, but I couldn't go anywhere - though the animated icon did flash to show traffic was going through to the connection at some level I think.

Try typing "route" at a shell when you have your connection established and see if you can see a gateway set with an IP for your ISP.

309862 2005-01-02 10:52:00 Are your ISP's nameservers listed in /etc/resolv.conf? Should look like this:

search xtra.co.nz # change to your ISP
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # primary DNS server
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # secondary DNS server

309863 2005-01-02 10:55:00 The ping worked for the number but not for the name. I adjusted the DNS section to manual and typed in the Paradise DNS and now I'm typing this from Fedora. Cheers. Twelvevolts (5457)
