Depends what you mean by Voice over IP . If you mean commerical alternatives to normal phone-lines, then no . If you mean that some New Zealand phone calls will go through VoIP circuits, then yes .

309372 2005-01-01 04:42:00 I don't think any companies have set it up for use for households - but i no some are planning to do so.
But if you have a fast enought internet connection, i no you can buy in certain phones and software that allow you to 'ring' other people using the same software etc.
No really my strong area, so someone else should have more info

309373 2005-01-01 05:46:00 I use skype & regularly talk with contacts in Aussie, Wales & NZ & use Messenger at the same time for webcam
Works perfectly every time & quality is flawless, no lag at all.
It's free for PC to PC, but you can buy PC to telephone services at very cheap rates but I haven't tried it
My brother is a car dealer & uses it daily to talk to his auction agents in Japan

309374 2005-01-01 05:58:00 I read up on VoIP a wee while ago and found a lot of interesting information.

If my understanding of the technology was correct, then the fact that New Zealand doesn't have an public PSTNs is a hinderance to the implementation of VoIP here.

I think it comes down to VoIP providers requiring access to the PSTN so that their customers can make calls to conventional landlines. However, with Telecom's stranglehold on the PSTN, we're not going to see this happening soon.

So while I personally would love to see VoIP services in New Zealand, it wouldn't be viable except for calling fellow geeks who've jumped on the VoIP bandwagon.

My memory isn't excellent, I'm no telephone network technician, and of course I interpret what I read. The information above may not be accurate and should be taken with a grain of salt.
