310191 2005-01-03 09:06:00 Running Win ME, I've installed Norton Internet Security and Antivirus 2003. After running liveupdate a couple of times and restarting as necessary, I now find there is one update remaining, however everytime I try to download and install that update it downloads fine, but when it starts installing I get this message:

Norton Internet Security Program Update
LiveUpdate must update Symantec Common Client. Please install this update first, restart your computer, and run LiveUpdate again.

I've had a search on the Symantec site, but can't come up with a way to get past this. I've tried running liveupdate several times now, and get the message every time (and the update remaining does not install). I've tried restarting etc. in between which makes no difference.

LiveUpdate reports that Symantec Common Client is up-to-date (the remaining update is something to do with the Internet Security URL settings or something I think).

Any suggestions?

Mike.

310192 2005-01-03 10:40:00 had this error myself, but then common client was listed as needing an update.

you should probably re-install norton, then update ONLY common client until it is fully up to date, then update everything else.

310193 2005-01-03 10:42:00 i agree with agent ive had this problem in the past i believe i fixed it by re-installing and updating only the common client :) Codex (3761)
310194 2005-01-03 19:29:00 Yup thats what it means. When it appears again with other updates, UNTICK every other update and install it by itself.

I've had the same message. It isnt actually an error, I think this file is just a bit more important than the other updates. That it needs to be installed/updated by itself.

You DON'T have to uninstall, and reinstall Nortons all over again.

You'll be there all year on 56k!

But my LiveUpdate tells me that Symantec Common Client is up-to-date. The only update available is the security URL update (at least I think that's the update...) - I can't tick or untick any other updates because there are no other updates available. So I can't install the Common Client update by itself, because it's not presented to me to update.

310196 2005-01-04 00:55:00 Go to Options | Live Update | Tick Apply virus protection updates | Black dot Apply updates without interrupting me
Reboot, go on line ? any joy
Running 2004 , Common Client updates are automatically done first followed by virus definitions etc

310197 2005-01-04 01:31:00 if you have installed microsoft service pack 2 there is a conflict the sound blaster cards and nortons security

uninstall your sound card and reinstall after rebooting your computer

I meant if it is available. Obviously if u already have it, or it doesnt show up, you cant tick/untick install it or anything else.

Thanks, but as far as I'm aware there are no service packs available for Windows ME ;)

This one sounds familiar. I had the same, or similar problem recently reinstalling NAV after reformatting a friends XP system.

After several tries I eventually licked it .....there was a small confirmation window snuck behind the front update and main NAV windows waiting for me to click OK. I had never seen it because it closed simultaneously with the update window.

This may not be the problem you are having, but try again and when you get to the "run liveupdate " message use alt+tab a couple of times just in case.
