| 310178 | 2005-01-03 08:35:00 | Hi guys. After spending a week out in the middle of nowhere with no computer, I found myself missing the daily grind of getting the computer to work. That, plus my dad's desire to get an iPod, we decided to get a laptop. After seeing the excellent review in this months PCWorld about this (www.asus.com), I put that alongside a Dell Inspiron for consideration. After seeing both for around the same price, they're both more or less good specs for our needs, but I need some opinions about which one to choose. Our budget is $3500. It's going to need 3D graphics. I'm not going to force feed it Doom 3 (Might try the demo for FPS test ;)) or Half Life 2, but it will need to pley the Sims 2, Simcity 4, Zoo Tycoon 2 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. Hardly the most demanding games, but a bit beyond the Intel graphics we've currently got :annoyed:. It's going to last quite a while, so would 128mb VRAM be best? It's got to have 512MB RAM (DDR preferable) very minimum, over 768mb best. 60GB hard drive is miniscule desktop wise, but how big is that for a laptop? And for my sake I would love for it to have a DVD writer. Then I finally could do a backup of the current computer (650MB CR-R is a bit too little :annoyed: ) The last thing is it must be over 1.6GHZ (Bragging rights ;), My friends don't care if a processor can handle more data, it only matters if it has a high clock speed....) Any help for getting the best deal would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks, Edward |

Having said that, Dell don't use Athon 64 cpu's so theirs will be inferior........ :groan: The Asus you linked to will run Doom3 no sweat at all. |
