310078 2005-01-09 03:29:00 Ok, I have now installed my Window XP Pro onto my friends computer (just for now, reformatting it after). So everything in his HDD is still there, so is everything in his 'My Document' folder. But for some reason I still cannot access his account folder in the 'My Document' folder, just like before. I can still access everything else in 'My Document', everything except for his account folder. Every time when I try to open it I get an error saying 'Access Denied' or something similar, and if I see what size the folder is, it shows 0 bytes. But if I go in from Knoppix I can see everything in his account folder and access them, problem is I dont know how to use Knoppix very well and read somewhere that if the drive is in NTFS moving files on that drive may cause lost of files. But now Window is accessible on that computer, so thats good.

So now that Window is accessible, is there any way of getting into his account folder?

310079 2005-01-09 05:28:00 yes, windows XP protects those so you can't hack into them - but I think you can access them if you log on as administrator using safe mode.

(default password is nothing, so just press enter)

310080 2005-01-09 06:55:00 Just tried accessing it in Safe mode, no luck, still 'access denied'. Would there by any chance that the folder is corrupted after the sudden reset? The folder is still accessible in Knoppix. CCF (6760)
310081 2005-01-09 08:32:00 there is something, im sure of it - perhaps someone else can tell me - its about security and access priviledges and stuff - somewhere in some setting (i know this does not sound helpful) there is an option where you can choose which usernames can access which folders.

Boot into safe mode (or somewhere you can get into admin account) then go into options for whatever it is (someone else please fill the details here) and change it so everyone can access that particular folder. then you should be able to access everything (as long as it hasnt been corrupted, as you say)

note; you may need to enter a password to change the options.

310082 2005-01-09 08:55:00 is it right click and then run as? Prescott (11)
310083 2005-01-09 10:16:00 no, that seems similar, but it's not what I was talking about.

but I did find this:

To make your folders private
Open My Computer.
Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C:), unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.

Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
Double-click your user folder.
Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

Perhaps you can perform the reverse?

310084 2005-01-09 12:02:00 Good news everyone, the problem is finally solved . The problem was all because of Permission settings were changed for that user's folder . Because of that no one could access it, not even the administrator .

To Agent_24
The permission settings, was that what you were talking about when you said " . . . its about security and access priviledges and stuff . . . "

To fix the problem, folder properties ->Security tab -> Add -> typed 'Administrator' -> OK . Then I changed the Administrator to have 'Full Control' of everything, then I changed some other settings in the 'Advanced' which then allow me to have full access on every file and folder which were in the 'Access Denied' folder .

Now I just want to thank everyone for their suggestions and helps, wouldnt of done it without you guys help :D , thanks .
