309986 2005-01-03 04:20:00 easy way
go to c:\windows\repair
copy autoexec.nt from there to
c:\windows\system32

in my experance the corruption of this file is due to virus or spy ware activity
do a virus scan
and spyware scan

Also the microsoft anwser to this solution means you need the original windows xp cd, but when I bought my computer brand new it came with windows xp already installed. WHAT DO I DO?????????!!!!!!!! 309990 2005-01-04 22:03:00 How do you fix this problem without the xp cd. What about all those who purchased their computer new with xp installed. Helpppppppppp!!!!! George2004 (6755)
309991 2005-01-04 23:19:00 If you have no CD, then all the files that would usually be on the CD are on your system, either on the C: drive or another partition.

Therefore it's simply a matter of extracting from there.

309992 2005-06-23 21:04:00 Beama,

You my friend, are a genius! I am using my daughters computer. She has had this for 2 years. It is Win XP home edition. THere have been many instances where I tried to install a certain program, and I would get the above warning and it would not install it. I have researched and looked ALL OVER the internet to figure out why this happens. No one has helped me until today. I was trying to install Desktop Architect. Although it was not intended for XP, I know for a fact from research that you CAN use it. Others are using it. So after I got the warning message, I pasted it into my search engine, and I found the link for the forum here. I did what you suggested, found it in the repair folder, copied it into the System 32 folder. Then I doubleclicked the exec program, and I'll be darned! IT installed like silk.

I can't THANK YOU enough! Now other programs should install as well.

Thanks again, Beama...

309993 2005-06-23 21:13:00 just an update on that, make the autoexec.nt that you copied "read only" that way nothing can change it or delete it as some spyware and virus's do. beama (111)
