| 310905 | 2005-01-05 08:46:00 | I have bought a DSE serial port Infrared adaptor to use with my new 6210 phone. In the instruction book it says to disable the ACPI function in the BIOS. Only problem is I cant find it as a setting to disable it. I have a 1200 Gigapro cpu AMD 900 integrated W98 SE OS. My BIOS is called AMBIOS. Second problem how do I know which port is COM1 or COM2 one port looks like it is used by monitor. There is a spare one but there are no numbers next to it. The instructions say select the port the IRDA adapter is physically connected to to. Do I have to enable the serial port in the BIOS to get it live. Couldnt find anything in BIOS that looked like it. I had 3 choices usb adaptor, motherboard adaptor or serial port. I went for serial port because I have run out of usb ports and noone could tell me if my m/b has header attachment for infrared. Thats why I went for serial port. :badpc: tedheath Thanks for any help |

By the sounds of your questions, you are well out of your depth, so option 3 is take the computer in for servicing . As far as getting out of my depth well thats the way I am. I am a scuba diver, private pilot, mountainer, done some caving. I am not scared of technology whats the worse thing that can happen if I stuff up a BIOS setting? I have goback its saved me heaps of time. tedheath |

| 310908 | 2005-01-05 09:48:00 | as for your ACPI settings, i am not sure about that but it may not be needed, it may be just the the makers like that to be set. as for com ports. most new system come with only 1 as standard and if you want a second then you need to get a plug to go on to the system board. pulg the IR device into the one com port you can find and give it a go. report back with any errors. |

| 310912 | 2005-01-05 20:10:00 | Do not confuse the monitor port with a COM port, they are different (in number of pins and in function) even though the frame size is the same. If you only have 1 serial port available on the computer it's certain to be COM1 in 95% of the cases. They are not labelled. Unless it has purposely been disabled in the BIOS I would not expect that you need to enable it, as it should be active by default. |

I once changed an "innocent" setting in my BIOS and thought I had lost my hard drive when the computer rebooted. It took a lot of sweat and fiddling to get it back again with the consequence that I am very nervous about going in there now. :D You are right though, it is flashing the BIOS that is the most risky and what I was actually referring to. Was just stirring the pot a bit, is all.... :p |
