310495 2005-01-04 03:39:00 Hi, I'm trying to install XP onto my Western Digital WD-80 SATA hard drive. I'm using a motherboard with built in SATA support, but when I try and install XP, it doesn't recognize it.

I don't have a floppy drive, instead I have a mulitmedia card reader. (I have a couple of flash cards)

Any help on how to install XP on this setup would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Nick

310496 2005-01-04 04:11:00 Is it only 1 SATA?? I take it, you've changed the boot disk in BIOS to the cd, and booting from there?

Also, with SATA, the cable that comes with it is only for data, u need a SATA power adapter (if one isnt on the power supply), and connect it to a spare power connector (4 pin).

Also, most motherboards with SATA, if you're making the system up, has a cd with the drivers on them. Some mobos dont need the sata driver to install from a clean install, (If you're not using RAID).

BUT I think some do... The file on the cd maybe called makedisk.exe or something. I'm not too sure if this file will extract to a flashcard, or if that flashcard will work, while you're doing a clean install of XP. Unless the BIOS has the option to do this as well. And picks up / detects that flash card before Windows boots.

310497 2005-01-04 04:22:00 Normally your motherboard/and or drive will come with third party drivers . When you get into the XP boot sequence for installation, one of the first things that comes up is

Press F6 if you need to install a third party SATA or RAID driver .

I think you may need some form of third party drivers first

310498 2005-01-04 04:30:00 Well some mobos yup do need 3rd party drivers, which are usually on the mobo cd, if you're making the system up yourself .

And you need these drivers, before u press F6, and the only way u can do this, is to extract the files from whatever the file is called on the cd, to a floppy or other removable drive, (if it works), when u install XP .

BUT, this only applies to mobos, if u have RAID / intend to use RAID, and have enabled RAID in the BIOS .

On some motherboards, if u DON'T have RAID or dont intend to use it, XP will install drivers to the SATA, and will format / install XP onto the SATA .

310499 2005-01-04 07:09:00 You might need to hook up a floppy drive just for the install, or else make up a special windows xp cd with the appropriate drivers and INF files on the CD. If you do go down the floppy drive track then press F6 when setup prompts you to do so, to install 3rd party mass storage drivers.
Then supply the diskette when given the option.

310500 2005-01-04 07:19:00 I just installed XP on a SATA drive using a slipstreamed CD with SP1 and I didn't need to do anything special. ninja (1671)
310501 2005-01-04 08:26:00 Yeah some chipsets on the motherboard have full SATA support and don't need drivers for them, ICH5, ICH6 etc. Older motherboards often have SATA running off the PCI bus and need 3rd party drivers.

Motherboard manual should detail this stuff?
