310770 2005-01-05 03:34:00 Not another "getting started with Linux" .

The reason why the standard books and articles give more information than most people need is simple: The writers aren't sitting at the keyboard of your computer . There is an almost infinite variety of "computers" . A short introduction will get you started, but it won't help if you strike problems with peripherals . But booting an installation disk will probably do as much (and it will have distribution-specific information in its text files) . The default disk partioning is usually GOOD ENOUGH for a first attempt . The main thing is to give it a disk with a large enough (1-5 GB?) "NON ALLOCATED" area . Linux will take it from there .

The Red Hat "Getting Started" guide is good . The text files (often html, readable from windws) on any installation CDs are helpful That's what they are for .

By all means, read articles in magazines . They'll cover the bare bones . BUT THEY CAN'T cover the exceptions .

Look at the manuals at the LDP site . That's where Linux documentation lives .

Look at your public library . Some of them have very good selections of Linux books . They are often big books . But it's all information . It's not just printed versions of the "Help" pages, like many of the "Windows" books .

310771 2005-01-05 04:23:00 HP have a course of lesson on starting out with Linux - you might try

www.hplearningcenter.com

I'm not sure if that clicks straight through. You might have to register first.

310772 2005-01-05 07:51:00 There's a nice article in their I saw about linux "Linux Workshop part one?" on pages 98 and 99.. Now being a poor student and all, I couldn't afford the mag, and still can't.. And it looks weird me reading a magazine and taking notes in the supermarket.
Go to your local library and see if it's there - even if it's just a reference copy, you would feel comfortable sitting there and taking notes from it.

310773 2005-01-05 08:31:00 The latest APC had FC3 on the cover disk as well as part two of the said article, and there is at least a part three . The DVD is worth the cover price even if you throw the mag in the bin .

PC USER has a Linux introduction course on the cover disk, starting last month and carrying on for three months . Again it is worth the cover proce in my view .

And yes I buy PC World as well, although the cover disk is not quite as useful as the other two, but I've still got several years worth in the bottom draw . Tends to good read though!!

310774 2005-01-05 08:35:00 and if you're ever in the running for a birthday present - get yourself Linux for Non-Geeks by Rickford Grant and you won't have to bother with the photocopy machine at all. Twelvevolts (5457)
