| 311637 | 2005-01-07 08:30:00 | I'm new to Linux - Red Hat 9, and decided to try an rpm from a cd. (RealPlayer ex free cd from an Ozz PC mag:). All went well, icon of a box on the desktop, install did its stuff - but I can not find it. If I click on the desktop box, I'm told its already installed; but not where. Can anyone help please. Thanks in advance |

| 311638 | 2005-01-07 08:37:00 | There is possibly an entry under the Gnome or KDE Menu for it. Have a look under Sound & Video (or similar), although I have seen installed apps end up in other weird categories. You can search for where realplayer was installed by running in a terminal window, it should be under /usr somewhere depending upon the install script: locate realplayer Also, try going ALT-F2 and entering in realplayer. I don't have realplayer installed so I can't be more specific sorry. |

| 311640 | 2005-01-08 09:36:00 | Jen and Chill, thanks for your rapid replies. I've tried 'locate' and yes it's there with loads of other files; but how do I get it as an incon on my desk top, or open it from the terminal. Thanks Sarum |

| 311641 | 2005-01-08 09:41:00 | What happens if you go ALT-F2 and enter in realplayer? Alternatively, do as Chill suggested and open a terminal window and enter in real and then hit the tab key and see what name gets autocompleted. Once the run command name is found, I can give you instructions for making a desktop icon or adding it to your KDE or Gnome menu (which one are you using?) [edit]Actually try running from ALT-F2 realplay and see what happens |

| 311642 | 2005-01-09 02:01:00 | But the RPM should have put it into one of the menus of the GUI. They do that. SZpend some time exploring all the menus you get from the "wheel" or "hand". There's a lot there. |

Many times the menu item will not appear untill you have done this. |

| 311644 | 2005-01-11 07:21:00 | Hi, Chill, Jen, Graham L and Sam; thankyou all for your help, I've tried all you've suggested but no luck. So frustrating seeing it lurking in /usr/lib, but not coming out to play. There're plenty of CD apps: on Linux so it was no big deal; I just wanted to see if I could manage my first rpm - I'm a newbie (and possibly your oldest member). I shall try another rpm from the RedHat CD's before resorting to Linspire(I wanabe a geriatricgeek). My thanks to you all. |

| 311645 | 2005-01-11 08:38:00 | Try: ./RealPlayer.bin or whatever the executable is that you got off the CD. I saw a FC3 How-To today and it said that the realplayer software came as a .bin file. www.real.com Grab either the bin or the rpm If you get the rpm (Which you seem to want to do) then: rpm -Uvh RealPlayer10GOLD.rpm I think we may be getting a little confused by .rpm's and .bin's - This isnt hard to do, and Ive done it myself before. Chill. |

| 311646 | 2005-01-11 09:42:00 | Ok I have actually read your post properly and see you are trying this on red hat 9 . The instructions below 'should' still work . Failing that, Give one of us a yell and we could send you Fedora 3 . Much nicer :2cents: Try: . /RealPlayer . bin or whatever the executable is that you got off the CD .
