311474 2005-01-07 01:10:00 recently i had a new 100g hdd installed, however now I need to partition it into 2 optical drive (one 40g and the other 60) the problem is i dint know how to partition. is there an idiots guide to this????? panamation (6679)

I think you mean logical drives.

Optical Drives are CD-Rom/DVD (laser) devices.

What operating system? Instructions will vary from OS to OS.

If the drive doesn't have a windows install on it (is blank) - just go into Control Panel --> Administrative Somethingerother --> Computer Management --> Disk Management --> follow your nose.

You can repartition and format from inside there (you will lose all data on said drive).

If you are installing Windows onto the drive you can partition it during the install process - it prompts you for this and is reasonable intuitive.

A quick search on google reveals a number of articles on how to partition a drive. Some of the programs are commercial, but some are free. Even fdisk can be used to partition. I use Partition Magic myself which is available here, www.powerquest.com

Be wary though - I've had significant bad experiences with above software if using it to "edit" partitions.

311480 2005-01-07 02:08:00 i tried doing it from bootup with the windows cd but when it asks me whether i want to repair or create a new installation it doesnt matter what i choose it always tells me the it cannot find any hard drives and setup cannot continue!!!!!! what the????? panamation (6679)
