311254 2005-01-06 08:33:00 Noticed this sub $1k comp in there catalog over the weekend, I thought it wasnt such a bad deal for that sort of money, comes with a 15 inch LCD 256 ram 40gig hdd cdrw and win xp home.

All we do is check email, surf the net and thekids play there blues clues and reader rabbit games(very basic), is it a good deal?

we bought an HP 6 years ago and have replaced everything bar the mobo so far and seem to be constantly battling with sreen lockups and fatal errors. I guess what I am asking is the following:

1) I think our current pc's days are numbered and as it has value similar to a box of smarties I am reluctant to spend any more money on it when it does crap out.
2) Will the same thing happen to the $999 Hp(hardware will pack up within 2-3 years)
3) Cant think of any other questions but I'm sure you guys will give the right advice.
4) I think wife put our name down for one today so it may be to late to be asking these questions.

Cheers

Mik

311255 2005-01-06 09:19:00 Yes I'd say thats not a bad deal for what you need it for. As always, anything computer related will be outdated in two or three years. Such is life :) As long as your ok with the 15" LCD (now mostly replaced by 17") then you'll be fine. It's not a bad deal. ~sy~ (95)

311257 2005-01-06 10:03:00 my hp 600 is still running ok after five years and its had my gruby little hands in there many times installing scsi cards, slave drives, expansion ram, usb hubs I ran out of pci slots (thank god for daisy chaining on scsi devices) and it never missed a beat I like hps but the only thing I didnt like was the RECOVERY DISK, I think they may gone down the the recovery partion track now.
My advice, that system you are looking at and the work it will be doing it will be ok, warrenty is an area I would look at even though I like HP's , better safe than sorry

311259 2005-01-06 21:25:00 gidday,

Yep the specs sound pretty good, you really dont want to run xp,
under 256mb ram as the machine tends to bog down with
anything under this.

xp is a lot more stable, than previous versions of windows, so most of your
glitches you are getting now, should mostly dissappear (hopefully)

HP machines tend to arrive with software installed that you may not
have any use for, but these can be removed as required. I'm on my
3rd HP machine, and the only problems I've had are ones I managed to
create myself.

good luck,

311260 2005-01-07 00:01:00 Check the spec of the LCD monitor. It may have a very slow reponse time (cheap) and you may find you get ghosting with the games. Also look to the future and consider that as the kids get older they will want to play more graphic intensive games. Davesdad (923)
311261 2005-01-07 07:21:00 oldest kid is only 6 so by the time they are old enough to want more intense graphics we will be replacing the el' cheapo I would say miknz (3731)

That seems like a pretty good deal they cant make much money on them.
No wonder these pc firms go down the gurgler.
I have the remains of a Macrocom which works well, they crashed burned died in 2001.

311263 2005-01-07 07:47:00 but basicly if you buy a branded pc all you are paying for is the brand, back in the day when we brought the hp Pentium 166 i think we paid $2500 for it, now its worth like 20 bucks :p Prescott (11)
